SHERMAN, Tex. -- Big Brothers Big Sisters is a volunteer organization matching children with positive adult mentors. This morning we learn more about the volunteer-ism spirit through the eyes of one woman who is really making a difference in our community. Jada Brawner is capturing little moments of magic.
"I think it grounds you to think how other people live, how other people view life," Brawner says.
That's the community service motto Jada Brawner lives by everyday, and the kind of attitude of service she puts into her own life, inspiring others to give back.
"Not everyone has the same opportunities in our society. If you have a small chance to give back to somebody, that's a very valuable experience."
Brawner is a volunteer with Americorps “V.I.S.T.A.” - Volunteers in Service to America. She is putting her experience with Americorps to use in Grayson County with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, and for her, it hits close to home.
"It gave them a sense of involvement. It helped in academics, made them better people, knowing someone spent time just for them."
Brawner is even a Big Sister, giving even more of herself to a deserving child who just needs a positive role model. So as you can see, a life of service has completely consumed Jada and her family.
The ultimate goal for them is more service later down the road, with the Peace Corps.
"That’s another attractive side. After I get my Masters in social work, that's what I plan on doing."
Brawner and Big Brothers Big Sisters executive director Nele Rogers have teamed up to really make a difference in the lives of local children. This year, Bowl for Kids Sake was better than ever, raising $35,000 and involving more teams than ever. The celebrity dinner also provided another chance for business leaders to donate cash for a good cause, and the big carnival allowed children in Texoma to sign up for their chance for a Big Brother or Big Sister to be included in those little moments that make such a big difference in their lives.
"My main goal is to build the program. We're always looking for sponsors and volunteers."
The mission continues, for both Brawner and Rogers. They are working on reaching out further for volunteers and children in the faith communities of Texoma.
"To help find 2 mentors, and 2 children. We think we'll be able to grow the program, and service more kids, which is our overall goal."
