ARDMORE, Okla. -- The entire Board of Regents of a prestigious national university enjoyed a retreat right here in Texoma. The University Of Oklahoma is well-known to many, and this week, Ardmore is well-known to university leadership.

It is not every day that OU president David L. Boren and the Board of Regents can all be found in Ardmore, Oklahoma, but the June meeting is more of a retreat, and the Noble Conference Center and Pavilion is playing host. Of course with a 334-page agenda, it's not exactly all rest and relaxation.

One of the big topics Monday was tuition hikes at Cameron University in Lawton and Rogers State University in Claremore.

The regents voted to increase tuition and fees by almost 10% at those schools and they are expected to do the same with the University Of Oklahoma. School officials blame the increases on higher electricity and fuel costs.

"So we had to raise tuition and fees. We're going to have to this year, unfortunately since we can't counterfeit money. But one of the things we can do is raise those scholarship dollars, and we've gone from giving private scholarships from 4,500 students to over 8,500 students," Boren says.

While everything is costing more, a few of us are also giving more. President Boren said they are almost four years into a five-year scholarship drive. The goal was to raise $50 million. Today they have $130 million.

It’s good news, Boren says, for students who will need the extra help.
