SHERMAN, Tex. -- Hundreds of people took some time Thursday night to enjoy the great outdoors at the first ever Sherman Night Out, hosted by Great Days of Service of Grayson County. It was a time to turn off the video games, get off the couch, and play outside. Daniel Gotera reports.

Everyone came out to have a great time at Sherman’s first-ever Night Out. Thanks to Great Days of Service of Grayson County, the community joined in.

"Turn off all the electronic things in the house and get out of the house come to the park and meet people and participate in the activities."

Dr. James Pledger is the senior pastor of First United Methodist Church in Sherman. Along with a huge number of volunteers, he organized the event, with the goal being to get families from in front of the TV to local parks, a sentiment which was shared by many parents at the event.

"Stop being in front of the TV. Let’s go enjoy the town."

"Summer is still hot, and I think right now it’s perfect hours to be outside, especially since in our community, you know, everybody together enjoying the park. I think it’s wonderful," Sherman parent Yona Aleman says.

Organizers say they love doing these sort of things for their community because giving back is at the core of their organization.

"We also have another group of people and that group of people wants to serve and we give them a vehicle through which they can serve their community and it does bring the community together."

While kids enjoyed the playground and the splash park, Dr. Pledger wanted to sit back and see his community getting together.

"Well, I’m not going to do the bounce house and I’m probably not going to do the pool. My greatest thrill is to go around and meet new people, so that’s what I am going to do."
