1-22-06 – Fire officials say Sunday’s soaking does not mean the burn ban will be lifted today. For much of Texoma, rain was a welcome sight early Sunday morning. Since November, thousands of acres have been scorched by wildfires. A drought that has gripped much of the area has left Texoma parched.
Fire officials say while the rain has relieved some of the danger, it is not enough to prevent more fires this week. When the temperatures and wind come back up, the high fire danger will also return.
Firefighters are concerned Sunday’s rainfall will give some people a false sense of security. In Ardmore, the fire department reports that there were a number of calls from residents asking if they could resume outside burning.
The National Weather Service expects the burn ban to stay in effect and the fire danger to return to the high category by midweek.
