1-23-06 - A Fannin County toddler died Sunday after he was shot by his seven-year-old brother. It happened on Sunday at a rural home near Leonard. Deputies believe the older boy accidentally fired the .22 caliber rifle.
It happened just after 1:30 p.m. at a home on County Road 3731. Deputies were called to Northeast Medical Center in Bonham after employees reported two gunshot victims in the ER.
Authorities say three-year-old Brandon Perez was shot in the head. Another nine-year-old child in the home sustained minor injuries. The sheriff tells us it's likely the bullet ricocheted hitting the oldest boy in the arm. He was treated and released from the hospital.
Perez was taken to a hospital in Dallas. It’s not clear if he died at the hospital or on his way there.
Deputies have interviewed the parents. They say they used the gun outside to shoot a rat and when they came back into the home, they asked their seven-year-old to set the gun down onto a table, and that's where it went off, killing one child and injuring another. The parents were in the next room at the time.
