Alito Confirmed by Judiciary Committee

The White House says Democrats who oppose Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito are guilty of "relentless attacks and distortion" of his record.

An administration statement dismisses Democrats' concerns about
Alito's impact on abortion, civil rights and presidential power as
"relentless politicization."

The Judiciary Committee voted ten-to-eight on party lines to send Alito's nomination to the full Senate for a vote.

Top panel Democrat Patrick Leahy says Alito's nomination "threatens the fundamental rights and liberties of all Americans."

A CNN-USA Today-Gallup poll finds 54 percent of people think
Senate should vote to confirm him.
