Woman, Child Killed in Tour Bus Accident

2-18-06 - PAULS VALLEY, Okla. (AP) A tour bus carrying 45 passengers overturned along an icy interstate today, killing a woman and an 8-year-old boy and injuring dozens of others.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports the bus crashed this morning, just south of Pauls Valley in Garvin County.

OHP Lieutenant Stewart Meyer says icy road conditions likely played a role in the crash.

The driver of the bus says a car pulled in front of him suddenly, forcing him to hit the brakes. The bus then slid and overturned.

Driver Miguel Esquada of Forth Worth, Texas, says the 8-year-old boy was sitting in the middle of the bus and was thrown through a window. He and the other victim were trapped underneath the bus.

Pauls Valley firefighter Brent Thompson says the boy was conscious and communicating with rescuers who arrived at the scene.

Thompson said some of the more serious injuries included broken bones, severe lacerations and internal injuries.

One passenger with critical injuries was taken by helicopter to the OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. At least two other passengers were taken by ambulance to Norman Regional Hospital.

Ana Gonzalez with El Conejo Bus Lines in Dallas says the bus was traveling from Kansas to Dallas, but said she could provide no additional details.
