Denison, TX -- Celebrating our nation's 232nd birthday across the United States and right here in Texoma. Those celebrations kicked off with a bang in Denison.

This was the sight over Munson Stadium in Denison, fireworks lighting up the sky. Thousands of people turned out to watch the display, listen to live music from Spur 503, and enjoy some 4th of July hotdogs.

The Community Fireworks celebration is a tradition that's more than 2-decades old.

To "me" why don't you go play in the road with a sack on your head. WOW!! What a loser to write that BS!!!

Posted by: me Location: denison on Jul 10, 2008 at 05:41 PM
Well let me say first. They are not fighting a war for my freedoom. SO tired of people using that. The iraqi was has nothing to do with MY FREEDOM. and last time i checked they signed up for it. It was no draft for that war. As far as my tax dollars going to the fireworks. Yes there was tax dollars involved. Who paid all the police officers that were there? MY TAX DOLLARS. and if your brother doesnt like not being home with his family next time its time to re inlist tell him not to and stay at home.

Posted by: tammy Location: denison on Jul 10, 2008 at 02:40 PM
So, it wasn't the best show this year. It was free, and they tried!! Some ungrateful people dont appreciate anything!! My 5 yr old liked it and so did I! Also, why do ignorant people keep referring to Denison as nothing but "white trash"? I make decent money, live in a clean house, have a nice upkept yard..I've been in many of the surrounding towns, and I've seen "trash" there too! Where exactly are you from that all of the residents are perfect???

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 10, 2008 at 11:00 AM
How do you know "me" is an American? "Me" is ungrateful obviously, but she could be another illegal complaining about getting something for free!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 10, 2008 at 08:58 AM
THE FIREWORKS ARE PAID FOR BY SPONSORS (LOCAL BUSINESSES) NOT THE CITY! GET THE FACTS BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN. As for the fireworks having delays (every five seconds), they are professional firefighters not specialists in entertainment. I guess when "me" does their own fireworks there is NO delays between fireworks. GIVE ME A BREAK! "me" you are truly an ungrateful American! Why don’t you keep you and your lazy kids at home.

I'd just like to comment about the ones that are griping and moaning about how terrible the fireworks show was in Denison. Maybe you should think about those that are away from their families fighting so you can watch a fireworks show. I am sure that most of the soldiers overseas would have gladly went anywhere so they could be with their families, but they were thousands of miles away and missed it. My brother is in Iraq and I know he would have loved to take his kids to a fireworks show even if it was the worst one around. Maybe "ME" should take a minute and reflect on some of the positives instead of dogging the firefighters (volunteer) that put on the show. It sounds as if she doesn't have much patriotic spirit. Let's try to remember the real reason we celebrate the 4th, to HONOR our past and current soldiers. I am not from the Denison area so I don't know what the show was like. No one forced anyone to go...stay home next time if you didn't like it.

So who is paying for the fireworks? If not us?

Posted by: TAX PAYER Location: Denison on Jul 9, 2008 at 07:58 PM
The firworks werent that great cause they spent so much money on that clock tower that is sitting a rotting. I would rather have nicer streets to drive on than fireworks. My kids enjoyed them though.

Mad mom, I think it's a lost cause. For whatever reason this person can't see reason. It's quite obvious that the majority of people on here appreciate what Denison did by providing a free fireworks show for everyone's enjoyment. You just can't please some people no matter what you do. It was free, she chose to come to it, it should have been an enjoyable outing with her kids (no mention from her of a husband), but she wouldn't allow herself to have a good time. If she was that unhappy with the free entertainment maybe she won't come next year. We know that what Denison did in providing this show for everyone to have a good family time was well worth it. One look at all the families there and all the kids having a great time playing on the football field, the great music, beautiful weather, FREE fireworks - what a nice thing for the city of Denison, the DFD and DPD to do for everyone. Those that don't like it don't have to come back next year - though they would be welcomed to.

Can you guys read??? The fireworks show IS NOT FUNDED WITH TAX DOLLARS. Please let that lame arguement go the way of your mobile home rent checks.

Posted by: mad mom Location: Oklahoma on Jul 9, 2008 at 07:30 AM
You are just mad because you were wrong, don't insult my husband because you put your foot in your mouth. Grow up. Why don't you go do the show next year and then it would be "perfect" like you, as it appears you must be. Why don't you read all the post before you speak.

Posted by: Ralph Location: Denison on Jul 8, 2008 at 11:37 PM
To "me"... So your 12 and 14 yr old were bored? So what? 12 and 14 yr olds are bored with just about everything at one time or another. With respect to you not donating to the cause...WHAT A LAME EXCUSE. Call City Hall, and ask about contributing to those who sponsored the event. Perhaps while you and your kids were so bored, you may have noticed the sign indicating the American Bank was a sponsor. Your excuse is like saying you would like to help abused childern, but you don't because you have seen any bruised kids walking around with collection cans.

White trash folks love fireworks! what a waste of money! how bout using the funds for fix your teeth or put skirting on your trailer houses. Denison is righ to target for spending their last skins on fireworks when their streets look like Acuna, Mexico and the blight is the rule for the neighborhoods. Keep it up Denison! You are right on the mark for your white trash citizens.

To Mad Mom, Tell ur husband not to givve up his day job of putting out fires. And they should learn how to set the fireworks off. One every five seconds was just horrible. JMO. and i am allowed to give it. Its a FREE public forum.

Posted by: mad mom Location: Oklahoma on Jul 8, 2008 at 04:53 PM
By the way, to all the ones complaining the firework show is all payed for with donations from the Claire Smith Foundation. None of your tax dollars are wasted.

Posted by: mad mom Location: Oklahoma on Jul 8, 2008 at 04:39 PM
I'm not mad that my husband had to do it, I'm mad that SOME people don't appreciate anything. Whine, whine, whine- grow up and do something productive for your community if you don't like it, change it. Go to your County Commisioners. Go to City Council meetings and see where your money goes. Some of the people on here would complain if they won a million dollars, why didn't I win 2 million! Gets old.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 8, 2008 at 04:13 PM
I will say that it was not spectacular, but it was appreciated. As I sat in the stands and looked around at the kids playing on the field and the old people clapping along with the music, it made me proud to be from a small town like Denison.

Posted by: AliceIn Location: Wonderland on Jul 8, 2008 at 03:05 PM
Well said, mad mom! I've been to Denison's fireworks show for the past 10 years, or more. This year wasn't as good as some, but so what, it was free and I still enjoyed it! I appreciate the effort by Denison to provide a free celebration for their citizens (and those from every other community in this area). I live in Sherman. I could have stayed here and gone to their "celebration" and gotten my face painted, but prefer to see fireworks on the 4th. So to the city of Denison, and members of the DFD and DPD, thank you for giving your time, money and thoughtfulness by giving us a 4th of July celebration. Please overlook ignorant comments by ungrateful people on here. Believe me, there are alot more people that enjoyed it than those that didn't. Unfortunately, it's usually the complainers that you hear from the loudest. Just know that what you did for us (free at that) is very much appreciated and we are looking forward to next year. Thank you!

Denisonian - Like I said there is NOTHING WRONG WITH A FIREWORKS SHOW!!!!! Sorry to yell but apparently you could not read it the first time. Denison does not allow fireworks in town so no worries on fires. If the county thinks the risk is high then they should institute a fireworks ban (similar to a burn ban) in years where the danger is higher. Otherwise I want my tax dollars to support the city functions. If you want yours to go towards entertainment that is fine. As my name indicates this is Just My Opinion which I am entitled to. Fireworks are not high on my priority list but safe streets are. Sorry you disagree. Maybe that is why the crime rate is so high in Denison. To mad mom, don't say it is a nice thing to put on a free show and then complain in the next breath because your husband had to do it! Kudos to the firefighters for volunteering their time. At least that helps keep the cost down and I appreciate that.

The one good thing I can say about Gainesville is they have a great fireworks show. Not only on the 4th but also on Memorial Day. There was free food, a great park, zoo, pool, and bounce houses. Next year come to Gainesville, it to is free.

Posted by: mad mom Location: Oklahoma on Jul 8, 2008 at 12:26 PM
Wow, some people do complain about everything! First off, the Firefighters take time away from their families to put on this event. Thank you DFD. Second many of the fireworks they got this year were bad, but they made due with what they had to provide a show. I think it's a nice thing for the City to do for their citizens. Glad your kids got to spend the 4th with you "me", some did not because their Dad's were busy putting on a free show for you. You're welcome.

Posted by: Denisonian Location: Denison on Jul 8, 2008 at 12:07 PM
JMO...did it ever occur too you that maybe the City is spending a couple thousand to put on the fireworks show so they won't have to spend a few thousand and a few lives putting out fires of those who try to do their own fireworks show. I am sure the fireworks show keeps fires and accidents to a minimum each 4th of July holiday. Just a thought! And as for me @ 4:01...maybe if you spent more money in the City of Denison, they would have more funds available to produce a "better" fireworks show. How ungrateful you are...

Posted by: JMO on Jul 8, 2008 at 10:41 AM
Nothing wrong with firework shows but it makes you wonder why the city can spend thousands on fireworks shows and we cannot get the pot holes fixed in the streets. I would rather see tax payer money going to better things than entertainment. Citizens should be on their own for entertainment and our taxes used for necessities such as law enforcement, city maintenance, and education.

Posted by: bored Location: Sherman on Jul 7, 2008 at 11:53 PM
To me at 4:01pm...your explanation is boring...blah blah blah. I spend money in Denison too! Just put your mouth where your money is and shut up! Sheesh.

Posted by: paul Location: i'm not sure on Jul 7, 2008 at 11:43 PM
paris has a great show.get's bigger every year.denison needs improvement.but it is better than sherman.they don't care if the people in sherman have a match to watch burn.

Posted by: Just me on Jul 7, 2008 at 07:34 PM
There are people in this world that will complain about everything & anything. To the ones that are complaining, did the city of Denison drag you to the event? Then shut up! Next year you can find something else to do on the 4th.

Posted by: me Location: denison on Jul 7, 2008 at 07:31 PM
To Anonymous: First off both my kids are very active in sports playing basketball, football and baseball. I guess the only reason you bring up kids playing video games is due to the fact thats what u and ur kiddos do. As for my kids they play baseball about 5 months out of the year and the rest is playing football and basketball. Now anytime you would like to come see my kids play let me know i will gladly email you my phone number and there schedule and you can come watch. You were probably the person that here at 11:10AM was refering to im sure?

Posted by: AliceIn Location: Wonderland on Jul 7, 2008 at 07:17 PM
To me at 4:01 - You came to Denison to watch the fireworks show and spent about $300 that you normally spend in Sherman. So, next year why don't you just go to Sherman, spend your money and watch their fireworks show instead? Oh - yeah, they don't have a fireworks show, do they? So quite your gripping and enjoy the show or stay home. You have a choice to do either. I for one am thankful for what Denison provides (free of charge) for everyone. I'm from Sherman......

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 7, 2008 at 06:10 PM
To me at 4:01pm. Next year keep your bored 12 & 14 year old at home so they can sit on their rears and continue to play video games instead of going outside and looking up in the air at fireworks. Maybe their necks hurt from changing positions?

Posted by: me Location: denison on Jul 7, 2008 at 04:01 PM
Ralph, first off, I have a 12 year old and a 14 year old who that it was also terrible. So dont assume anything. As far as making it better yes no doubt what so ever i think dension should take up donations to help support and only make it better. However they are either to lazy to do so or dont want to pay someone to take the donation. I for sure would have donated if someone was taking them. No doubt about it i will ( put my money where my mouth is). I can also assure you the city of denison makes lots of money on the taxes they get from the extra money that comes in to the city. I know forsure i spent money in Denison that night( Gas,Food, and we also went to albertsons and bought weekly grocerys to let the crowd dye down after the show) all in all i spent about 300 bucks in the city of dension that i normally go to sherman and spend. So take part of my tax money along with the other 10000 people that where there and make it better then one firework every 5 seconds.

YOU KNOW I ENJOYED IT COULD IT BE BETTER SURE BUT YOU KNOW EVERYONE THAT IS COMPLAINEING LEND A HELPING HAND OR DONATE AND WHEN IT GETS BASHED LAST YEAR YOUR FEELINGS WILL BE HURT AND BESIDES I WAS AMUSED ANYHOW ALL THE WHITE TRASH PEOPLE WALKING AROUND WAS SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT YOU KNOW DENISON DOESNT HAVE TOO MANY THINGS TO TALK ABOUT AND THIS IS ONLY ONE OF THEM

Posted by: Amazed Location: Denison on Jul 7, 2008 at 09:43 AM
Wow, talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth. The city tries to do something nice for the whole family that doesnt cost a thing and people are still complaining!

Posted by: Ralph Location: Denison on Jul 6, 2008 at 11:09 PM
Of course, you can find more elaborate fireworks shows than the one in Denison. Just because ours was not the best on the planet doesn't mean it wasn't worthwhile. For sure the vast majority of the kids present enjoyed the show, and really isn't a fireworks show for the kids? Considering the tough economic times in which we find ourselves, ANY fireworks show is a luxury. Add up the cost in dollars nationwide, and you would likely find it is a staggering number. Personally, I believe the $ could be better spent, but then again, I can take them or leave them. If you are a fan of fireworks displays, and you want the Denison show to be better next year, I suggest you put your money where your mouth is, and make a donation. OR fill your tank, and drive to and from a show you think will be better.

Posted by: disapointed citizen Location: Denison on Jul 6, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Once again i wont be back it was a sorry excuse of a firework display...

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 6, 2008 at 08:24 PM
kay and dan,you idiots need to go elsewhere.

Posted by: Proud Citizen Location: Denison on Jul 6, 2008 at 09:32 AM
Again, if you didn't like the show, don't come back next year. There are plenty that did enjoy the show, we won't miss you.

Posted by: Kay Location: Denison on Jul 5, 2008 at 11:18 PM
I was very diappointed this year, looks like the city is low on funds.

Posted by: fireworks Location: worth seeing on Jul 5, 2008 at 10:37 PM
If you want to see the best fireworks, go to Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. It is cheap, $2 park, $3 addmission, coolers and lawn chairs welcome. The best firework show you will ever see. WELL WORTH IT, I PROMISE.

Posted by: dan Location: denison on Jul 5, 2008 at 09:15 PM
Have to agree with ME. That was a pretty bad show.

Posted by: Erin Location: Denison on Jul 5, 2008 at 01:34 PM
My family really enjoyed the show last night. It is very nice that Denison provides this every year. I don't know why people complain about a free event that they did not have to go to. Thank you to the people who provided this.

Posted by: AliceIn Location: Wonderland on Jul 5, 2008 at 11:27 AM
"Me", complain about the fireworks all you want. All I have to say is "Thank you" to the city of Denison for providing this show. The other cities in this area don't do anything. You don't see any firework shows in Sherman, do you? I think it's great that with the economy like it is Denison still provides a Fourth of July fireworks show and music - all free, by the way. Denison, thank you very much! And "me" - you only would have seen the fireworks at the Ranger game IF someone managed to hit a homerun - but next year why don't you go ahead and buy tickets to the game and take your chance. Leave the seats for Denison's show to someone who appreciates what they do.

Posted by: Billy Location: Denison on Jul 5, 2008 at 10:43 AM
I attended the Dension fireworks show last night. Enjoyed it very much, thanks. I know allot of hard work and planning goes into this. I appreciated it. But...how about doing the "Pledge of Allegiance". before the fireworks show? is this not what the 4th Of July all about? Also we sat on the visitors side in the staduim. It was hard to hear the music. Next year, can they turn the speakers around, kind of setup, like the DHS graduation was. Or just use the staduim P.A. system. Anyway, thanks again................

Posted by: Proud Citizen Location: Denison on Jul 5, 2008 at 10:17 AM
The fireworks were great! Thanks to all who put in the hard work, to put on a show for all to enjoy! By the way, if you didn't like the show, don't come back next year. There are plenty more that did enjoy themselves, we won't miss you!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 5, 2008 at 12:30 AM
They were great as always. Thank you Denison for putting this display on each year!

Posted by: me Location: N Texas on Jul 4, 2008 at 11:21 PM
That was the worst firework show i have ever seen in my life. I could have went to a ranger game and seen better fireworks when a batter hits a homerun.
