2-20-06- Opening statements will start Tuesday in the Canton trial of a parent accused of shooting former Canton football coach Gary Joe Kinne. Kinne moved to Waco in January to become the linebacker’s coach at Baylor University.
Jeff Doyal Robertson is accused of barging into Kinne’s school office last April 7th and fired one shot before driving off, and later being caught. Kinne was critically wounded with his ribs being broken and he lost 80% of his liver. His recovery was long, but his mother-in-law Jan Rich from Denison is just hoping the trial brings them closure. Rich left Monday for Canton to attend the trial on Tuesday.
Robertson is charged with aggravated assault against a public servant, which carries a possible life sentence. Robertson’s son played on Canton’s freshmen team. Authorities say the father had been barred from Canton school and football games after incidents that included shoving and verbally abusing coaches.
He has remained in jail on a $1 million bond since the shooting. He is also charged with possession of a firearm where prohibited.
