Jury Deadlocked in Trial of McKinney Mother

2-25-06 - McKINNEY, Texas (AP) - A judge has declared a mistrial after the jury deadlocked in the capital murder case of the woman accused of fatally cutting the arms off her 10-month-old daughter.

Jurors deadlocked today in the trial of 37-year-old Dena Schlosser. She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the death of her daughter Margaret.

The jury said in a note to State District Judge Chris Oldner that any further deliberations would be pointless." Jurors deliberated nearly nine hours today. The judge halted the trial after 40 hours of deliberations over four days.

Police arrested Schlosser in November 2004 after finding her baby dying in her crib. Schlosser was covered in blood, holding a knife and listening to a hymn.

The defense says Schlosser didn't know right from wrong during the 2004 slaying and want her committed to a state mental hospital.

Prosecutors say Schlosser must be held accountable for the death of her daughter.
