Students Flock to Denison for Leadership Program

2-25-06 – More than 200 students from across the state of Texas are in Denison this weekend to meet with local leaders. Middle and high school students came from all corners of the state for the 6th Annual Texas Youth Advisory Commission.

The summit focuses on teaching students how city government works. The goal is to encourage young people to consider careers in government.

The two day event boasts team-building workshops with other students. Visiting mayors and city council members were also there to help with leadership advice.

The Denison City Council formed its youth advisory commission three years ago and volunteered to host this year’s program at B.McDaniel Middle School.

City leaders say the program is also good for the local economy. Hundreds of visitors are staying in local hotels and spending dollars in town.
