Burn Ban Lifted in Some Counties

2-27-06 - After months of restrictions, some residents south of the Red River are no longer under a burn ban. Grayson County is one of the three local counties no longer under the burn ban. Fannin and Lamar County Commissioners all voted to lift their burn bans Monday morning.

Commissioners say they considered several factors including this weekend’s rainfall, where around two inches fell in some parts of Texoma. Another factor was that some people in Texoma have not been able to burn in Grayson County since September. Sherman firefighters who respond to many county fire calls are concerned that the decision of lifting the ban might be premature.

Cooke County reviewed their ban Monday morning as well, but a vote to lift the ban was not on their agenda, which will keep their ban in place.

Fannin County says they will take another look at their ban in two weeks, but all commissioners across Texoma say if they have to, they can call an emergency meeting and reinstate in the burn ban. All Oklahoma counties are still under a statewide burn ban.
