Possible Suicide in Commissioner's Death

3-6-06 - The OSBI is investigating the death of Bryan County Commissioner John Spence. The OSBI said Sunday that initial investigations who the cause of death to be an apparent suicide. Spence was discovered by a family friend around 8:00 p.m. Saturday night hanging in his out building on his property in Bokchito.

Authorities say he was last seen around 3:00 p.m. Last month, Spence resigned from his post as part of a deal to have criminal charges dropped against him and his road foreman dropped. Spence was under investigation for misusing county funds and equipment.

Spence served as county commissioner for district three since May when he won the special election after the death of Sonny Hart last year. The associate district judge for Bryan County says the past year has been a difficult one for the community and that many are feeling the loss of John Spence.

Precinct three includes much of the northern portion of Bryan County and the towns of Caddo, Bokchito, and Bennington. The other two commissioners for Bryan County will oversee precinct three until the general election in July.
