Gunshots Leave Two Dead in Springer

3-8-06 - An apparent murder-suicide has left a man and woman dead in Springer, Oklahoma. The Carter County Sheriff is still investigating, but says it appears to be a murder-suicide.

Deputies got the call around 10pm that a domestic disturbance was in progress at the home on Lumberman Road. When they arrived, they found 40-year old Michael David Barter lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head and 28-year old Kelly Diana Towe inside a nearby vehicle, also with a gunshot wound to the head.

Neighbors say that the two had been arguing throughout the day, when later that night Towe tried to leave in a truck when Barter followed her and ran her off the road. Then he shot her in the head while she was in her truck, and then shot himself. Michael Barter died immediately. Towe was transported to Mercy Hospital where she died Wednesday morning around 6.

Carter County deputies are not releasing their names, but say it appears to be a murder-suicide.
