Manhunt in Atoka Co.

3-26-06 – Authorities are searching for a man who led police on a chase early Sunday morning. Police say Anthony Dean Palmer of Grand Prairie, Texas led a Tushka officer on a chase around 12:30 a.m. after the officer tried to pull him over for speeding.

The officer says he spotted a Chevy truck speeding north on Highway 69 near Boggy Depot Road. The driver eventually pulled over. When the officer asked the suspect to get out of the vehicle, the driver hit the gas and made a hard turn towards the officer. The police officer says he jumped out of the way and followed the vehicle.

At one point, the driver went south in the north-bound lanes on Highway 69. After the officer shot out one of the suspect’s tires, he drove into a wooded area where police lost sight of him.

Sunday morning, authorities recovered the Chevy involved in the chase in a wooded area one mile east of Tushka.

Since then, witnesses told authorities they spotted the suspect in a residential area. One woman says she found a man, matching Palmer’s description in her car. He ran away before authorities could get there to investigate.

Palmer was wanted on a larceny warrant out of Texas. The Atoka Sheriff’s Department, Caney and Tushka Police are working with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to find Palmer. The Department of Corrections also providing a canine unit to help search on the ground while a plane has been searching from the air.

OHP says they believe Palmer is not a threat to the public, but they are asking for information on his whereabouts.

Palmer is a 35 year old white male with brown hair and hazel eyes. He is 6 feet tall and weight approximately 160 pounds.
