3-29-06 - For the second day in a row lawmakers from both parties in Oklahoma have come together to help rural fire departments. The senate unanimously approved a bill Wednesday that will raise state funding from $2,700 a year to $5,000 for over 800 departments statewide.
A $2 million revolving fund will be available for departments to help replace equipment and the bill includes a $5,000 death benefit for families of firefighters killed in the line of duty. While lawmakers are pleased with the steps being made to help firefighters they say there is still a long way to go.
The bill will go to Governor Brad Henry for his signature, which lawmakers expect to come as early as Thursday.
