3-30-06 - Two wildfires erupted in Amarillo Thursday destroying three homes and threatening about 40 others. Texas Forest Service officials say about 400 acres were burning, but estimates are difficult because of wind gusts topping 50 miles an hour.
Agency spokeswoman Traci Weaver says there were no immediate reports of injuries. Weaver says the biggest concern is the wind. She also says relative humidity is very similar to what happened earlier in March. Wildfires in West Texas and the Panhandle killed eleven people and several thousand head of livestock.
On March 12th hundreds of blazes broke out in the parched region eventually burning nearly 1 million acres. Weaver also says high winds grounded single-engine tanker planes. She says an air tanker was being dispatched from Alamogordo, New Mexico.
