ARDMORE, Okla. -- We first told you last week about renewed concerns over pollution in Ardmore and of the EPA announcement that a northeast Ardmore Superfund site was more contaminated than anyone thought. Tonight, the discussion will go public.
The meeting has been much anticipated by concerned citizens and environmentalists, ever since the public notice issued by the Environmental Protection Agency almost two weeks ago.
The notice said that the Old Imperial Refinery site off the 142 Bypass in northeast Ardmore has more contaminated soil than the experts projected, and that because of the location of some of that waste and the costs associated with removing it, some of it will have to be left right where it is but covered up with clean dirt brought from elsewhere.
We spoke with the EPA manager in charge of the Imperial cleanup last week. She said the meeting is open to everyone, and encourages a healthy discussion.
"Explain the changes, and why those changes have to occur at this particular juncture, and entertain any questions or comments that they may have so that hopefully everybody will feel comfortable -- not necessarily happy -- but comfortable," Katrina Higgins-Coltrain, Environmental Protection Agency, says.
The meeting is set to begin at 6:30 Thursday evening at the Ardmore Public Library.
