“Megachurch” Campus to be built in Sherman

4-16-06 – Megachurches continue to sprout up across the country and on Easter Sunday, a groundbreaking was held for one in Sherman.

Texas ranks second in the nation for the number of megachurches, or houses of worship with members numbering in the tens of thousands.

One megachurch congregation from the Dallas-area is planting roots in Texoma with a groundbreaking for a satellite campus in Grayson County.

The Covenant Church senior Pastor flew to Sherman by helicopter for Sunday’s groundbreaking. The church moved into a facility on Travis Street. A massive reconstruction project is set to begin. The church plans to expand into a 2600 square foot space. The structure will also stand 52 feet tall so that it can be seen from Highway 75 and Highway 82.

Community leaders were present at the groundbreaking. Sherman Mayor Bill Magers said the church would bring growth to the local economy. Once completed, the $300,000 project could raise membership from 150 people to about 700.

Other local church pastors say Grayson County is ripe for megachurch expansion and that larger congregations are becoming more popular.

The Convenant Church expansion project is set for completion in six month.
