OAKLAND, OK -- Some citizens in Oakland, Oklahoma are distancing themselves from their town mayor and even calling for her resignation. An audio recording of a July council meeting captured Margarette Redwine, the mayor of Oakland, using a racial epithet.

The meeting took place July 7th, when the town's board of trustees began discussing a problem with chickens. That's when Mayor Redwine spoke up and voiced her solution to the problem, and suggested a slingshot could be used, except she did not use the word slingshot. What she did say was a phrase that many people find horribly offensive.

Robin Beal caught up with Mayor Redwine Friday afternoon at the Oakland Town Hall.

I have been advised by my attorney not to say anything so everything is referred to him, so, if ya'll would like to talk to him, call David Mordy,”said Redwine.

When asked if she was a racist, Redwine replied, No I am not, No I am not. I have several black people married into my family and I am not.

I am confused. What other word is there for a slingshot?

Posted by: Farmer John Location: Everywhere on Jan 2, 2009 at 10:54 AM
Until black people STOP using "that" word it is still useable by all,get over yourself. You cant have your cake and eat it too.

It is comments like those made by Oakland, OK Mayor Redwine that keeps America from being all that she can be. We live in the greatest nation in the world, but racial insensitivity causes unrest and discrimination to rear its ugly head. She should resign immediately and if she doesn't the citizens should rise up and demand her removal. When our elected officals show their prejudicies it gives a sense of false security for other hate-mongers, that its okay to say or do these things. We shouldn't stand for it and America should let it be known that we will no longer tolerate blatant racism no matter who or where it comes from. The greatest thing in the world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving.

Just reading some of these posts...and you people wonder why nobody pays attention to the people of OK...many of you are not too bright. And to all of you hollering about how white people couldn't have their version of UNCF, I have this to say to you all: for 300 YEARS white people have gotten by on the color of their skin (and it's still going on), white routinely choose to hire other whites, white children are overwhelmingly accepted in college in disproportionate numbers, and blacks are over-represented in jail. In sum: we don't wanna hear you. And before you complain about blacks and handouts, let me remind you most of the women on welfare are white women, so tell them to put their hands back in their pockets FIRST. And any black man who publicly states he isn't voting for Obama is lost. Oh, last thing: next time you wonder why your kids can't get good school books, check out how the R's continually cut back services. Where do you think your tax breaks come from?

I wrote a comment yesterday on a large mud/water hole in the city of Oakland - on City property. It wasn't posted - yet pro Obama post are. So, we can campaign for Obama - but not point out other problems with Oakland? My post was more in-line with the topic of the article. This water/mud hole happens to be at the corner of my daughter's home. It is a health & safety issue, in my opinion.

Enough already!!!! Just get over it, it is time to move on with your lives and forgive and forget what the Lady said. Good Grief.

I want to say that the community center in Ardmore is more of a provider toward black kids than any other kids when it comes down to who's who. I know in their hiring process they hire black first over anyone else! Especially when they had Harold Brown in charge!

The good ole boy government will be bred out eventually and those words we learn at the kitchen table will eventually die out..

Posted by: Marshall County Native Location: Marshall County on Aug 13, 2008 at 04:50 PM
Hey Cheif - if you don't like a dictator running things - you need to show up at the Marshall County Chickasaw Council meetings (second Tuesday of the month) and vote to unseat the dictator (she calls herself "president"). If you don't do as she "demands" - she and her cronies will tell you that you aren't welcome to come back to the site. Which isn't true. Talk about taking about rights.

Posted by: Karyn Location: Kingston on Aug 13, 2008 at 04:42 PM
Why isn't the City of Oakland following is own rules & regulations? According to the Madill Record a few months ago; if an Oakland Resident leaves water standing on their property they can be fined. If you care to go to the corner of 4th & Woody you will see a huge water/mud hole that has never been dry in over 6 years. It is large enough for a small child to drown in. Yet, after numerous calls to have the hole simply filled with gravel, the City of Oakland has yet to do anything. Also, this is a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. The stinch on some days is overwhelming from the stagnant water. There is no kind of drain there - it takes 2 weeks of hot, dry weather for the water to evaporate - the mud never dries. Again - this is at the corner of 4th & Woody - just in case the City of Oakland wants to come fill in that hole.

Why can't we all have our own organization? I will donate the first $100 for the untied caucasian fund to help out our deprived white children. Oops, I guess I'm racist now. People need to learn their history because my family was too poor to own slaves. They actually had to pay for their housing, food and clothes, etc. Doesn't look like much has changed, people still wanting a handout.

Some black kids at school called my daughter "redneck" and "cracker" and threatened to stab her. One black girl threatened to bring her daddy's "B-B" gun to school and shoot her. I went to the Principal's office and filed a complaint for the threats and the use of racial slurs against my daughter. White people stand up for yourselves. Do not allow children of other races to use these slurs against your kids. It's the same as using the words: gringo, cracker, redneck, n****, beaner, gook etc. Wake up speak up!!!

If we are going to stand up for someone, lets stand up for all of the residents of Oakland who are getting screwed by our Mayor and her EMPLOYEES!

Posted by: fed up on Aug 13, 2008 at 08:43 AM
Nunya, you don't think I know what these things are for? I know UNCF is to send black kids to school but all I'm saying is whites could not have the same thing to single out just sending whites to school with the funds raised or we would be called racist! If I say I'm a proud white woman, I'm racist but it's ok for black's to say it all over TV. WHY IS IT WHEN WE DON"T SEE COLOR, YOU FORCE IT DOWN OUR THROAT!! I am American. Quit using terms to seperate yourselves from everyone. Yes I have people of all colors in my life I don't care if it matters to you or anyone else,yes-people that I care about, let that be and stop making it a black, white or any other race issue and move on. I'm so tired of the whole thing.

Get over it! Yea she is racist, just like 75% of the population. Blacks are racist towards whites, Indians are racist towards whites, mexicans are racist towards whites, and whites are racist towards all of them right? So what it will never change. My dad calls a slingshot that word, he is 78 years old, I tell him not to say those things around my kids, but it happens. And by the way what does mascots got to do with this issue? The redskins have been the redskins for over 100 years, and have more indian population in the school now than whites. So whats the big deal? Just learn to get along!!!!

Hey. Guess what? There's about to be a black president of the United States of America. (i.e. GET OVER IT!!!) (P.S. I'm white!!!) Now, we Texomans can move ahead with the rest of the country and progress...or we can continue to live culturally 20 years behind everyone else in the country and continue racist, childish, and downright backwoods attitudes. Elect people that are going to make our towns a better place for our children. This lady has no business in a position of influence. End of story.

It is true that it is ok for Black ppl to say racist things against whites and not vice versa. OK...so what?!?!? I think this is extremely bad behavior on both sides. All the ppl that get mad when blacks say racist things and get away with it dont have anything to say when white ppl say racist things and get away with it. (Look at Dog and Imus) They both said racist things and went right along working (honestly Imus' comments were slightly racist). The point I am making is who cares? Ppl say racist things all the time. I can get on here and complain about racist remarks even though we have all used them. There are much more important issues such as our impending recession, WAR, rising gas prices, and immigration reform that deserve to be discussed but you never see message boards erupting over these issues (except immigration). WE THE PEOPLE of the USA need to look at the bigger picture, our empire is falling while we are running around with our heads cut off over BS.

I was at an Indian hospital the other day and notice it was full of white people. I talked to a few and it seems they were 1/64 Chickasaw and eligible for full Indian benefits. I was wondering what Black people think if there are or was white people with 1/64 black blood going around saying they was black and they had blonds hair and blue eyes, would you be offended? or is it just white people going around hustling Indian benefits and black people dont have white people with 1/64 black blood acting like they are black.

let me give first hand report of this woman. She is a dictator of this town and she trying to take away our constitutional rights. if you go against her on an issue, she will send the 'dog catcher' after you to issue you an citation and you would have to pay it or your water will be shut off. Things such as your grass is more than 3 inches high, or poison ivy is growing on your property. Where is our "due process". None here in oakland.

Posted by: James Location: Atlanta on Aug 11, 2008 at 07:12 PM
I think it is sad thta her defense for not being racist is that she has several blacks married into her family...WOW and she said that to prove. That statment alone leave question to me. I just wish everyone would see how we are all here in the messed up world together... Whites, Blacks, Spanish, all of us are here together. And at this time in history we are all struggling as a whole, so why bring someone down for something they cant help. Lets spend more time focused on issues that are affecting us as a whole instead of bringing division. LOVE ALL PEOPLE... NOT JUST YOUR COLOR OF PEOPLE

Posted by: Jess Location: New York on Aug 11, 2008 at 04:10 PM
This is exactly what racism does..divides and conquers. Alot of these comments are just as bad, if not worse than what this mayor said. I am African American and I hold EVERYONE by the same standards. No one should use derogatory terms towards anyone else-whether it be someone of the same race or not. It just a matter of basic human decency and home training. What did your parents teach you people? This is directed towards all of you who have no respect towards their fellow man. Believe me, I know my history and what my people had and still have to go through but I choose to use it for the advancement of humanity as a whole. Haven't you all heard of Martin Luther King? Has everything that the people in those times fought for been eradicated already. I pray for everyone whose heart is so hardened that they don't have enough sense of self pride to respect and care for others not because they're TOLD it's the right thing to do but because it's inate in their character. Pray 4 yourselves.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: G-ville on Aug 11, 2008 at 02:07 PM
Ok people get over it!! If you don't want white people saying thing like this the don't say them yourselves. Our children go to school together and when they hear a young black child say the N word they think it is ok, but as soon as they say it they get in trouble. If you want to get rid of rasism (which isn't likely) get rid of B.E.T. and all the Black mags out there. That is truely racist.

Along with other english slang words. Cracker, white trash8,trailor trash, honky, when these are used everyday, no recourse is made. No NAACP, NO NEWS,NO APOLIGY just a great american joke like your story is. Good luck keeping your job if you put this woman in the hospital.

I am offended by is the FACT that she made the comments in the meeting, being recorded and when giving an out, her unbelievable stale beliefs left her clueless. Old, white, and ignorant is no excuse for her arrogance and doesn’t leave me with one to be compassionate for her. I applaud the NAACP or any person who addressed this issue. They ARE wise enough to know, that this wasn’t an attempt to rid racist, but to expose the un-resentful ease of her "out loud" thoughts. This is only a minor issue because her influence on most people doesn’t exist, and if she was anyone with any power, I would feel uneasy about her thought process. But, if we can’t collectively agree that no public official with such disrespect (for her self, town and others) has a place to govern in decision making, than we won’t grow as a people and we will continue to have people making lame excuses for such poor action. Yes, let’s move on to bigger things, however, take care of the little things first.

The Mayor uses a horribly offensive term and people who have a problem with are supposed to "get over it" beause some of think it's no big deal? How immature and short sighted can you be. This woman holds public office and is the official representative of her community - no way should she be using language like this. The only one who needs to get over anything is this ignorant Mayor and her supports. No one is saying that she should be run out of town, but she definitely should be held accountable for her words some way. And for the record, Native Americans do not have the market cornered on suffering, so it is ridiculous to act like no other group has been mistreated. That kind of attitude is not productive.

For those that say they have taken the N-word and made it good for black people are stupid! I am not going to take the words that were used as racial descriptions like, SAVAGES AND REDSKINS and say its good for the Native Americans because it's not! There are Native American groups now that are trying to have schools and sports teams do away with the sterotypes of Native Americans. And I have seen plenty of whites, blacks and uncultured Native Americans doing the chants and tomahawk chops to know we are in this fight alone! Someone said that the NAACP is for all minorities, that's a load of garbage! The NAACP is a joke. We as a people survived the extermination of the US GOVT and made it this far to having a better future. So forgive me if my heart doesn't bleed enough for others that say they have had it hard because of the wrong doings of another race. Racism is a disease that was brought to this continent by the Europeans, for they had the problem with others being different.

Posted by: midniteryder Location: Sherman on Aug 11, 2008 at 02:01 AM
"African American"? I don't call myself European-American- I call myself American, and I just happen to be white. You may or may not happen to be black, Asian, Indian, or whatever. If you wish to accuse me of being a racist, why yes, I am. A HUMAN racist. Total number- over 6.5 billion and growing every day (that's roughly the population of Earth, BTW). The lady used a word she shouldn't have used, yes- do we now have gulags for people who use certain words? There was once a country that did have a vast prison system for using, saying, or thinking certain words- words like freedom, liberty, democracy. It was called the Soviet Union. Some of you may say America is the same- to you I say bull. You haven't the slightest inkling of life in a repressive regime- go ask someone in North Korea, China, or perhaps Eastern Europe. CAll off the PC watchdogs, already- tell her she said something that isn't necessarily a good word to use these days (which I agree- it isn't) and get over it.

Hi Fed Up, you said what about the United Negro College Fund? Read a book or too. The United Negro College Fund was set up to Blacks go to college. Not racism. BET began because MTV would not allow Black videos to be shown on their network. Why not get mad at La Raza (which means the race) or the many different spanish channels that express their culture. What is wrong with Blacks expressing theirs? Shame on you for not knowing what racism is! Also, the mayor is wrong for using that language and should resign. Free speech isn't free. You can say what you want, but it will cost you. Also, I don't think it's right when racists comments are made by elected officials at all. It has no place, value and it does not positively help the community. She should resign!!! And Speaking of the term African American, there are many illegals who come to this country daily (hourly) who refuse to speak English, where is your gripe with them? They still call themselves: Mexican. Your argument is weak.

Krystal I'm african american and I don't appreciate you generalizing all of us and stating that many of us don't care for whites. That is the most ridiculous statement i've ever heard. Now I do truly come from a progressive african american home and it was taught to us not to genralize other groups. In this day and age its time to stop blaming each other and simply educate. Culturally we're different. Its time to just accept that. If I don't understand a custom from another race I ask about. I don't make judgements. Judging doesn't solve problems. I'm not saying that what the mayor said was wrong, but i'm saying lets offer ways to solve the problem rather than just demand resignation. By reading all the negative comments from both sides, its just truly sad that in this day and age we can't have educated arguments without the finger pointing.

Black People: Let's be serious! I know you all are not offended by what this woman said. Let's first begin taking care of business in the Black community before we try to chincheck someone else! To be honest, Black people treat eachother like ISH! Many think that the further you are from Black, the better! Many believe in the European standard of beauty and can not stand up and be proud of thick lips, nappy hair, and the more "afrocentric" characteristics that some of us have! To be honset, what this woman said does not hurt me! She is what she is! It is what we say about each other that hurts. If you are not trying to change your mind about yourself, then you have nothing to say about this broad!

What most white Americans need to understand just because you have African Americans in your family does not mean you are not a racist. That thought alone is racist. Frankly, it is important to be sensitive of what you say. This problem will not change until Afican Americans are afforded the same capital to build their own communities then equality will be achieved. White Americans will still live with this problem that their forefathers created with slavery and Jim Crow laws that systematically gave white privilage and discriminating against African Americans. Most White Americans do not have to worry about getting a job or taking care of their families, in fact, they are the hiring authority that again systematically discriminate to prevent Afican Americans from opportunity. Until White Americans embrace African Americans as equals to them racism will die. But it will not die because White Americans want to deny they are undercover racist like drug addicts. So watch what you say.

i am a black woman from nc and happened to click on this story and felt compelled to comment. i am on the fence on this one. yes, it was wrong for her to say it. but as i can see, she is an older white person who at one time in her life it was an acceptable term to use. even in public. as few as 30 years ago this was an acceptable term not only in closed company, but in mixed company as well. it is hard to stop using a word that at one point in your life was part of your everyday vocab. i sympathize only because i have recently tried to cut back on my own colorful language and find myself "slipping" every now and again. now on the flip side: its 2008 and the word needs to be buried in all of us. in all races. it is deragatory, hurtful, and not necessary in today's society. on a final note the naacp just need to SAT DOWN somewhere! every time somebody say "the word" there are so many OTHER items in the black community that need attention like the rise of HIV in blacks worry about THAT!

Posted by: portia on Aug 10, 2008 at 08:02 PM
lol.. this is beyond pitiful. Okay first of all, she says " I have black people in my family..." so what?! And because you do does that make your comment less offensive, and you not viewed as a racist?...No! There are millons of KKK and racist people (black included) with a race in their family that they do like. That means nothing. And for the person who commented saying white people cant say we are proud to be white, because we are viewed as racist, well I'm sorry but blame your ancestors for that, because I can gurantee you that if blacks or any other race had brought white slaves over to America, and whites (instead of blacks) went through segregation, I am 100% sure you could get away with saying that without being viewed as a racist. That is not our problem. The point is, is that racism is still strong in America, and to be quite honest, it makes whomever feels that way, look very pathetic (from any race). Move on, because the rest of the country has...

Posted by: white on Aug 10, 2008 at 06:29 PM
Plain and simple, we are tired of defending everything we do or say while others can make racial comments and nothing happens. I'm tired of being made to feel guilty for being white. If you say you're proud to be black it's a good thing, but if you say you're proud to be white-you are a skin head racist! Just because you are proud to be white?? Double standard BS.

Dear Krystal. Well how nice. You tolerate whites in the workplace only because you have to, otherwise you have no use for whites. You would never want a white person in your home, and certainly would not want a white person to marry anyone in your family. You frequently use the term "Cracker". You say you are from a Progressive African American family? Progressive? Really? My, my. It would appear then, that the whites of past generations who passed their prejudices on to future generations were not actually racist, they were progressives just like yoy! Thank you for educating me. Our future is in good hands.

No wonder everyone thinks OK residents are uneducated. It is WRONG to be racist. It is stupid to be predjudiced. Just because you grew up saying a certain word doesn't mean it's right. It just means your parents were as just as ignorant and backwoods as you are. She should be called out for this because what she did was wrong. I'm laughing at how some of you morons try to justify her behavior. It was clearly unprofessional at best. She wasn't at some redneck family reunion - she was speaking publicly. And this is coming from a Georgia Girl too!

Krystal, suprise, suprise, many blacks don't like whites-- news flash REALLY? We are so ignorant we never knew!! Many of us grew up hearing terms that we did not understand, but the difference is once we became old enough to understand we decided for ourselves whether or not we choose to continue this attitude. I could give a rats #** whether you or anyone else thinks I'm racist. I know for myself how I feel and people with your attitude make me lean that direction more everyday. And as for making excuses and being cowards, we can't wipe our butt the wrong way without NAACP all over it-this is proof of that. I owe you nothing. Period. Get over it. Grow up and move on.

This is absolutely unacceptable. Mayors and other public representatives are expected to be professional and not use racist terms from the past. She said " go out there and get you an old N_gg_r shooter (slang for slingshot) and take care of it and put it in the pot" If Presidential hopeful John McCain said that then there would be no question as to what the implications are. Are city representatives less accountable than national ones? I think not. Her behaviour and comments were said in the heat of the moment when she was talking about something that she was passionate about. A moment when her true self could come out as opposed to fake "official un-prejudiced personality". Using a sling shot to shoot African Americans is not funny and not a part of Americas history that should be taken that lightly as to have an American Major use that term in place of saying "slingshot". Absolutely unacceptable.

I am an African American and I personally was not offended by this peckerwoods comments. By looking at her home, I can tell she is typical of her kind who is on here defending her: white trash with little education who are bitter that many African Americans are more educated and live better than them. Deal with it. The same excuses can be made for Rev. Jeremiah Wright (1st amendment, what he heard growing up, he was joking, blah blah, blah). I am from a progressive African American family and I grew up hearing the word "cracker," among others. I use it quite frequently myself. I have no use for whites. I tolerate them in the workplace because I have to but I don't want them in my home or marrying into my family. Many African Americans do not care for whites. The difference is, we are not cowards. We don't make excuses and try to hide behind phony denials. We make it known whites are insignificant and of no use to us.

I'm so sick of this subject. What about United Nigro College Fund? What about Black Entertainment Television? What about the kid that called my son a dumb### cracker? What about the term "AFRICAN AMERICAN" He said it best--"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthpalce, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, tha American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people" Theodore Roosevelt- 1907

She was wrong! Period! It's easy for someone who hasn't experienced the pain of racism to say, "lighten up", "this is ridiculous", "give the woman a break" .. African Americans have taken a word that was CREATED (N*ggER) to belittle, insult and otherwise make a race feel inferior , and have TAKEN BACK THAT WORD (N*gGA) and now use it in a positive form to express love and brother/sisterhood ... and to use the excuse that African Americans use the word too just to excuse her racist comment is cowardice and is either using that as an excuse to continue with their racial behavior or lack the imagination to properly explain the Mayor's ignorance. It's not the word in itself that's the problem at this point, it's who uses it, in what connotation and understand that what was acceptable then, it simply not acceptable now.

Posted by: simply divine Location: Baton Rouge, LA on Aug 10, 2008 at 01:30 PM
First of all, it is plain irresponsible and down right ignorant for an elected official to utter any racial epithet while they are being videotaped or recorded. Number 1, the N-word was used as a derogatory word against blacks to dehumanize us and make us feel inferior, lower than animals. We as African Americans took the term and changed its original connotation altogther so no, a non black person shouldn't dare say the n-word whatsoever out of their mouths when in the presence of a black person. This may seem bias to you who are not black. You want to know why we use the word and you cannot? Simply put only BLACK people can take a word that meant such negativity and embrace it, change its spelling and now it has a different meaning altogether. Racism is racism and her comment shouldn't be kindly swept under the rug. Her ignorance is unjustified. And you gotta love her last comment about having blacks in her family...ha! that doesn't make it right, Ms. Redwine.

Surely she understood it was being recorded..... there is nothing to debate.... She was wrong.... Let her constituents decide.... and dont feed your detractors.... but then again thats a total duh moment so it is what it is.... sorry for acting like I cared or expected something different.... That just plain stupid, and I highly doubt that any troops sacrificed their lives for people to use the 1ST AMENDMENT in an abusive manner. GROW UP and READ BETWEEN THE LINES, for a change. Most Americans believe in the first Amendment. When your a public figure and you represent a given population you have to be held to a different standard. What happened to loving your neighbor? What happened to we are all treated equally? What happened ethics, morals, values? I am African American and NO ONE has the right to call me anything but my name QUEEN!

Posted by: John Schisko on Aug 10, 2008 at 11:53 AM
The original phrase is Jerry-rigged! Using the N-word is racist! Using any combination of the word with other words is racist! It should not be called Politically Correct, its just Correct! Theres nothing political about it. But I'm assuming that most of you are from an older generation of people who are not suseptible to change. It goes with the territory. The First Amendment should not be quoted here. She will not be put on trial & sentenced to death for her choice of words. But all actions have consequences. Her consequences may not be legally challenging her First Amendment rights, but they are consequences none-the-less.

its so funny to me that white people are always commenting on why cant we say that word... black people can say it.... why are white people so obsessed with being able to say a word that has sooooo much hatred built in it? Black people took it and changed it to be the opposite of what it was intended to be. Let us have that.

Posted by: DexxDogg Location: Baltimore on Aug 10, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Racist words can be construed as an attempt to be sly about your racism. Especially, from a public official. Her environment allowed her to feel comfortable saying a slang that is offensive to African Americans. She shouldn't feel that comfortable. This isn't the 50's or the 60's. I bet if she said something about Jews, she would be on CNN or MSNBC saying I'm sorry. I don't care if she is racist, I care that she feels comfortable with racist slurs in a public setting. I'm sure many of you who have posted on this site use them at home, but not at your job! She needs to resign and find another line of work that isn't as a public official. She blew it and I don't feel sorry for her stupid actions.

Posted by: e Location: o on Aug 10, 2008 at 10:20 AM
The fact of the matter and major issue here is that this isn't just some woman talking on her porch or amongs friends; she is a PUBLIC SERVANT and was involved in an OFFICIAL MEETING. Slang, ok, fine-in context and the right environment. If she feels comfortable enough to use racial epithets during town hall council meetings where the official business of the town is being discussed, why wouldn't she be racist? God only KNOWS what she says off the record. True enough the NAACP doesn't get on blacks for calling other racial groups epithets-that's not their function. They are to ensure that minorities-not just blacks are afforded equal opportunities and protection from negative words and deeds-such as this-by those in powerful or authoritative positions. She was wrong and using the "I'm not racist, I have black friends" doesn't work for me.

Hell, yeah she is a racist and everyone making up excuses for her is too. White people stop using the excuse that I have black people in my family so that doesn't make me a racist. Bunch of Bull, in no way does that mean she is not a racist. White people take pictures with blacks all the time so people won't think they are racist when they really are. I AM WHITE AND I HAVE BLACK PEOPLE IN MY FAMILY AND I HAVE WHITE PEOPLE IN MY FAMILY THAT HATES IT VERY MUCH WITH RACIAL SLURS AND ALL. So white people lets stop being fake and admit that she is racist very racist even when she shakes the hands of black people she still is.

Get rid of the thick skin already, it is what it is and so what. Why do we have to keep catering to these groups after all these years? Watch T.V. any day and you will hear "white boy", "cracker" and the like, is that not a double standard or is it their way of gaining some sense of payback. Heck, they already have a lock on the music industry with the crap they put out and they have all the white womens they want, what else do they want? The white man is the minority nowadays so quit whining and at least let us have something from the past to hold onto even if it is just a word. get a sense of humor for Christ sake.

At first I wasn't going to comment on this story, but I will say this... First of all, not all African-Americans use the n-word. Contrary to what some may think, there are many of us who speak intelligently and not like we just walked off the set of a rap video. I do think the mayor's comments were in poor taste to say the least. To say the word she used is not racist is ridiculous. The reason why many of us find this word offensive is because so many people have fought and DIED, so that this word would not be used so loosely in public. I believe racism towards any race of people is bad, not just African-Americans. I do agree with what one poster said about the NAACP jumping all over this incident and not racist terms in reference to Native Americans (it should be combating racism on all fronts)and a few other issues within our own community. I personally do not think she should have to resign, but she should apologize to the citizens of Oakland.

Get the rest of the story! Why the tape was brought to the attention of Madill Record and KXII! Come on folks, was this really big news? Check into John Moss' background and why he wants the Mayor to regign. Could it be that the Mayor has worked hard and long extra hours for the little town of Oakland and there is the green eyed monster on the backs of many. The letter to the editor of the Madill Record is from a non-citizen of the town and the information in it came out of the Oakland office and all of it is incorrect. Yesterday's news should have only been good news or on the bus wreck. The word was discribing an object, not a person. Get on with good works and let the petty stuff die on the vine. But, KXII - try your best to get the whole story as to why this is being beat to death and brought up to the public. KXII and the Madill Record should report on all the good works that have been going on in the area. Get out there and get air-conditioning to poor folks, etc.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE 1ST AMENDMENT? how many troops have died throughout our country's history to make it possible to speak freely in america? MAKING PEOPLE BE "POLITICALLY CORRECT" IS A NAZI MOVE. Hitler would be proud. who cares if someone calls someone a name? you people need to grow up and let people have an opinion. if someone thinks the world would be better off without white people, they should be able to have that opinion. they shouldn't be able to go out and get rid of all the white people, but they should have the right to their beliefs, BECAUSE IT IS A RIGHT GUARANTEED TO THEM UNDER THE BILL OF RIGHTS. If someone wants to hate someone because they are black, they HAVE A RIGHT TO DO SO. Black people can call each other n****, but white people can't? If that was the only problem we had with her, that comment is the least of it. Do a story over where our little towns money is going, and why our water bills are getting higher when we ain't using any more gallons of water. Or why our roads can't get repaired. What about that Mayor???

I asked a friend about this and he explained to me about what she said and it had to do with the "N" word then the word "shooter." I haven't heard a sling-shot phrased liked that since I was a kid. It's an old phrase used many years ago by the older generation like her. She shouldn't have to resign over it. She apologized and now move on. When the schools around here stop using "Savages" and "Redskins" for sporting teams then she can resign! Why doesn't the NAACP help eliminate THESE sterotypes too? I haven't heard them take on that issue around here to help Native Americans rid the schools of those hurtful names! Since football season is coming up, why doesn't Robin Beal take on that crusade?

WOW! racism between humans and chickens? this is got to be the stupidest story of the year. the agenda for the meeting was a problem with chickens and anything said about the chickens has nothing to do with race or our country's race heritage. do not exploit it to the lower end of the food chain. by the way, I do not discriminate my chicken thighs from my chicken breasts, they are both delicious any way you cook them.

What did she say? where is the posting of the comment?

This isn't news, just crap. This is not newsworthy!! I bet all of those older gentlemen on camera have used the same term

Not a big deal if you ask me. Old time "slang" words are not racist. Get over it.

Well perhaps the lady is getting old or altheimers disease and had a slip of the tongue and really does regret what she said. Old habits and what you grow up hearing do have a tendency to pop right out of the mouth moreso as you get old and I've heard and even said a few outragious things myself although never bad enough like this to hurt anyone's feelings.

KXII, if you are going to report on a story of this magnitude, please report the whole story or don't report it at all. This story seems to be a month old anyway! So, what did she say?

Posted by: Richie Location: Sherman on Aug 8, 2008 at 09:10 PM
ok, I'll bite. I've heard it called a slingshot or a wrist-rocket. What phrase for a slingshot could be construed as a racial epithet?

Was the Mayor's answer to the chicken problem going to be to shoot them with a "sling shot". Does anyone else see a problem with this? What will they do with barking dogs, and cats that climb into dumpsters?
