DURANT, Okla. -- Durant police now have a new four-legged officer on the team. ‘Baron’ is not only new to the force-- he's new to the country. The one-year-old German shepherd arrived from a training facility in the Czech Republic.

Baron has been paired with master patrol officer Jesse Petty. Baron is trained for both patrol and narcotics work. Petty says he is excited to be working with Baron, but says after years of working with recently retired K-9 trooper, it is a challenge getting used to a new partner.

"There’s something I’ve got to teach him and some things I’ve got to learn about him, as opposed to my other dog. We pretty much knew the ins and outs of each other, and I knew what to expect of him, and he know what to expect of me. So, it'll be a little different but at his age, he's young, he's a year older, so I’m looking forward to instill a lot of traits," Petty says.

In 2007, Durant’s two police dogs responded to more than 160 calls. Petty expects that number to increase since Baron is trained in two areas.
