OK Teacher Pay Raise Possible

4-26-06 - A funding bill passed by the Oklahoma State Senate Wednesday includes more than $300 million for education and some of the money is being set aside for teacher pay raises.

Oklahoma is ranked in the bottom five states nationwide for teacher pay, yet is in the top ten in quality of teachers and is a problem senators say this bill will address. The bill will allow a $3,000 pay raise for the teachers if passed by the House and some lawmakers say the bill is long overdue.

But on the flipside Republicans opposed to the plan say they have promised taxpayers to bring state spending under control. Three Republican senators voted for the bill along with 24 democrats, but in the House Republicans have the majority.
