Bryan Co. Sheriff’s candidates hope for better voter turnout in runoff election Save Email Print

BRYAN COUNTY, OK -- Fewer Oklahomans turned out for the primary elections last month than have in decades, especially for a presidential year. With such a dismal turnout, as Emi FitzGerald reports, candidates in the August 26th runoff election are still hoping for more people at the polls so the majority of people are choosing area leaders.

As candidates in Bryan County prepare for next week's runoff, they hope for more turnout than in July’s primary.

"I tried to think back and remember, “Did we advertise it? Did we put it enough in the papers?"

Sheriff Bill Sturch says many people he has spoken with since the primary said they did not even know an election came and went.

So will the runoff be a repeat turnout wise of last month? Bryan County residents we talked to were for the most part unaware of what is set to take place later this month.

Sturch has served as sheriff for 15 years. He was an investigator and Army officer before that.

"I’m one of those that can manage budgets and put people on the streets."

His challenger, Roy Brown, served as a state trooper, Durant police chief, and recently taught police officers in Iraq.

"I know how organizations are supposed to be run and I think I can make positive changes in the sheriff's office."

But with so few turning out to the polls, Sturch says a minority of people end up electing who will run the office, which is contrary to democratic ideals.

"However you vote, you need to get out and vote, especially in a year when we've got a presidential election."

Both candidates hope the word gets out. The sheriff's race, along with other runoffs across Oklahoma, is scheduled for August 26.

Good luck to all the candidates because the election is going to end everyone's immature tirade below:-)As everyone knows, small communities like ours has nothing better to do than gossip. And FYI: There are many DPD officers that support Roy Brown, there are a few who didn't and are almost gone:-)

The Civil Air Patrol and Bryan County Emergency Management held a drill to prepare for real life situations this weekend but where was our County Air Force? Was this a typical no-show by our Sheriff's Department...

Posted by: DoWhat Location: America on Aug 24, 2008 at 10:41 PM
Well "See Location" sure sounds like a whipped puppy crying for his beloved Sheriff. Wait until Tuesday evening and you can start looking for a job, if you can find one. Your examples of computing is inaccurate and so is your understanding of Oklahoma Criminal Laws. A typical know it all that knows nothing!

Posted by: See Location: Up Here on Aug 22, 2008 at 03:10 PM
So, Mr. Attorney at Law, you have prejudged the issue and determined all by yourself that these people have committed a felony. Well, it's also a felony to pretend to be an attorney when you have not passed the bar. Had you passed the bar, you would be aware that: 1. There are computers outside of the Sheriff's office, including some in people's homes. 2. Felony is only capitalized when it's the first word of a sentence, which is something any deputy, let alone someone who has graduated from law school would know. 3. A computer tech cannot trace entries on a website and it would take at least two subpoenas to have them do so, one to KXII and one to the ISP to determine the user of the IP address, which more than likely would come back to a router serving multiple computers. 3. It's a misdemeanor to use county equipment for political campaigns. Mr. Make believe Attorney, not a felony.

Posted by: Fat Back Location: BCSO on Aug 22, 2008 at 02:35 PM
Sorry Mr. Attorney, we here at the BCSO are just doing what Sheriff Sturch tells us to do, you know he gets mad as a gut shot hog, when someone learn's about some of the stuff he has done, like releasing Mullinix from jail, so he could kill Tristen. He also is worred that people will learn that his Air-Force is a Big-Hoxx like Big-Foot.

Posted by: Hair Salon Location: Durant on Aug 22, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Bill Sturch wanted to go and play with the Iraq police, but when he found out that he had to wear a steel helmet over his beautifully ironed hair, he backed out.

I can't believe how many deputies and sheriff employees are using this site to bad mouth Candidate Roy Brown. Keep talking and you might not be able to keep your job when Brown is our Sheriff. Now let me tell you deputies that it is a felony in the state of Oklahoma to use county owned computers or equipment to endorse a candidate for any political office in any way, shape or form. That includes using county computers to use the Internet to enhance Bill Sturch's re-election bid. You have committed a Felony and any computer tech can trace all entries made on this website. Now you have something more to worry about than when Roy Brown is our newly elected Sheriff, you might be charged with a felony and end up sitting in a cell in one of our jails instead of sitting at our sheriff's office all day.

Posted by: Shelley Carter on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:57 AM
I have never spoken with Roy before in my life. I can make my own opinion without having someone influence it. It is common sense that Sturch is a moron. And Brown has nothing to do with it!

Posted by: Runaway-Bud Location: Cordell Road on Aug 22, 2008 at 08:51 AM
Well Prase the Lord, so Mr. Brown had the morals and ethics and went to Iraq to train police officers, serving his Country. Take note Mr. Sturch he does know how to train and supervise his employees. They won't be playing The Dukes of Hazzard on the roads with Patrol Cars and junk airplanes. This will be good for the livestock people and the citizens. Bill this is different than chasing women, this is a case where a man has more ability than you, unlike a man that has a lady you haven't chased. You are a bit jealous hugh. One don't have to be any smarter than a hog to know when someone is serving their country, they never loose there state voting rights or citizenship, wow Bill Sturch you and your Set, Grow, and smoke deputies are grasping at straws. If your puppet boss looses HOLY COW, you will have to go to work, or find someone else to pay you for setting and doing nothing. Wory Not Roy's Toy I will kill your vote.

Posted by: Was Roys Toy Location: Durant on Aug 21, 2008 at 04:52 PM
Roy!I guess you thought you had my vote well,uh not no more.I don't know what kind of crazy circus you have going on here I am now out of it.It is true that you are running illeagally cause after reading the law you have not been a full time resident of Oklahoma and I as one of your old use to be friends know you have not been, you may have claimed Oklahoma as residence but you were over in Iraq,So this just goes to show you are not leagally able to run and you know that and here you are tring to get people to vote for you and making all kinds of promises and how you are an honest, sincere person,Really Now! Where does Honest and Sincere fall in to place when you can't even run honestly for Sheriff and those that are backing you must be crooked as well,I challenge you look it up read for yourself,YOU should not be running for office. Now I know why the PD got rid of you and the FOP and OHP can't stand you, without any of those Departments who will have your back?At least Bill has them.

Posted by: MYBIZ Location: Calera PD on Aug 21, 2008 at 04:30 PM
My,My,My!This is just a shame that all this nonsense keeps going on and being said.Mr.Roy Brown do you pay people to be your friend and to vote for you cause after reading all this BS it seems like you have people backing you that like to run their mouth and keep crap stirred up, Does this County really need that,No It doesn't.It needs some one who will get in there and do an honest job and who does not have a crooked person like Kenny following him everywhere hoping he will be one to get a job if Roy would make Sheriff Will I hope that people will read all these stupid comments and realize that Roy Brown keeps crap started.

This is so funny, all you deputies that **** *** for their non existant jobs, sure think that a sheriff responsible for murder and wasting his budget on mostly lazy employees, and junk airplanes, also, four door limos, is a MORAL Man; LOL. It is possible he is more Moral than his lazy employees that can't even write a report, they have to call an officer who is actually protecting the citizens to drive all the way across the county burning $4.00 gas to take the report. . . of course the lazy employes did make it to the all you can eat buffet lunch that day. Hey, Bill Sturch what has happened to your Air-Force, I don't see much law enforcment work going on with it. It is good that you let the pilot and his buddies go out for catfish in the C-172. What were they investigating in Love County????

Posted by: right on on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:53 PM
right on shelley. i think you and billy bob are right on target in what you are both saying. Billy bob is pointing out that there is lawsuits pending against bryan county because of sturch and you're pointing out the only ones bragging about boss is the deputies. Carry on Shelley and Billy Bob/

Posted by: Shelley Carter on Aug 20, 2008 at 03:05 PM
Billy Bob Buck: I think you misunderstood me. I said that I am voting for Roy Brown. The only ones that say good things about Sturch are his deputies and relatives.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 20, 2008 at 02:27 PM
When Sturch looses his election, he can go back to being a private investigator of finding good looking women that he always has had a problem with. haha

another question anti arkie, you said for him/her to worry about their innocent lady murdering son, If there son is innocent as you stated why would they need to worry about him unless that is a threat you are making. this is an article about the sheriff's election please stick to the facts about the sheriff and leave personal attacks and threats out of here.

Posted by: read for information on Aug 20, 2008 at 10:03 AM
to anti-arkie, someone step on some toes so that you have to resort to personal attacks. HOW IS THE MARINE DOING??????

Posted by: Hal Patrick Location: Bryan County on Aug 20, 2008 at 07:52 AM
HOLY JESUS; Bill Sturch who ever the kinfolk deputy was you told to to engage clutch and open mouth about Arkie, is a real Dip-Stick. It appears that the truth really hurts you Bill. Maybe, you should get the Doctor that gives you prescription drugs for for the jail inmates (without ever seeing them) could give you something for anger management. I have changed my mind Roy Brown will get my vote now.

Posted by: Arkie Location: Colbert on Aug 20, 2008 at 07:35 AM
Well lets see Mr. Anti-Arkie, now if the horse weighs 1000 lbs, and goes threw the windshield, and the car continues on for another giant contact, humm, the fool was going to fast, and all horses are good horses, unlike BCSO employees, and thank you for admitting Sturches other criminal acts about allowing the sheriffs prisoner out of jail to murder Mr. York, and the unsupervised offecer flying through calera at 1:30 AM, and hitting an innocent citizen, if Sturch would let them play with his toy airplanes that might curb their need for speed, this kind of thinking plainly explaines why Beatys murderer has danced through the county for four years; and I don't have a son to worry about, all girls; Okay, so you need to find a new sorce of information, until you do maybe you should Shut-up, MORON and do nothing as usual for the taxpayers salery that you steal.

Posted by: Billy Bob Buck Location: Carpenters Bluff on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:28 PM
Shelly Carter. . .how about the 2 lawsuits filed against our Sheriff, where one Prisoner died as a result of Mr. Sturch's Jail Administrator, and one was badly beaten, Case Number CJ-07-00129 and Number CJ-07-00130, Has Mr. Sturch, took responsibility for his actions in these cases??? It appears alot of prisoners in his jail turn up dead or beaten, these cases are filed in the Bryan County Court. How much will this cost the tax payers, recall Mr. Moore he got Bryan County all the way to the Supreme Court, and Sturch intends to out do BJ.

Posted by: Shelley Carter Location: Bryan County Voter on Aug 19, 2008 at 04:49 PM
I love that people are finally speaking the truth about Bill Sturch. The only ones that say anything good about Sturch are his employees and all 500 kinfolk in Achille. I will be voting for Roy Brown. I am tired of this mess!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 04:34 PM
Now this is funny "Sheriff Bill Sturch says many people he has spoken with since the primary said they did not even know an election came and went". What a crock of crap Sturch, the people really did not even want to vote for you. Also as for your deputies, they are a big hypocrit as you are too.

Posted by: Anti-Arkie on Aug 19, 2008 at 04:21 PM
Arkie, you need to see about maybe getting a new source of information on one of your questions. The deputy that hit the horse, was not on a dirt road, if it was a good horse someone would have claimed it, cause if the officer had been at fault, the GOOD HORSE would be paid for. The deputy was not speeding, there were no skid marks because he was knocked out in the first impact with the horse, then the second impact was a fence line and a tree. If you have your facts right, please continue your ranting. Till then SHUT UP MORON!!! And worry about your innocent lady-murdering son.

i for one am ready for a change in all our elected officials. i don't know mr. brown but i do know what mr. sturch has done (nothing) i don't know how mr. brown was in his former jobs that everyone speaks about but i do know mr. sturch is not qualified to lead a horse to water let alone try to run a county police office.

Posted by: Whats Up Bryan County!! on Aug 19, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Um, question fro some of those idiots who want to keep knit picking at anything and everything.Do you really want to put someone in the office of Sheriff when he was voted out by his fellow employees cause he could not do his job right nor could he stop tipping the bottle, that is all we need is a drunk Sheriff running the street oh and not to mention a pervert at that you can ask many women out there about that one. Also i don't think Roy Brown can run as Sheriff legally as he has not been a resident full time for two years in the state of Oklahoma if he was over in Iraq so question is Roy Brown be honest as it states in order to run for Sheriff in Oklahoma you have to be a residnet in that state for two full years without leaving and ummm I don't think you have been so uh who is playing games and not being honest.Sturch you have my vote as you and your guys do a good job and are honest at it.So Roy step up to plate and be honest to the citizens.

Posted by: Austin on Aug 19, 2008 at 03:10 PM
As a independent voter in we do not get to vote in democratic or republican elections. Just because we dont want to join the club we are ousted for riding the fence. I hope your voter turnout goes way down. I would have voted for the other guy anyways and not the ones in the run off.

Posted by: Dale Jr. Location: Jackrabbit Speedway on Aug 19, 2008 at 02:29 PM
Great Comment Mr. Anonymous, that is very true, also the Special Grand Jury recently said in their report, that the jail remains an unsupervised mess, and that Sturch should have solved the Beaty Murder, instead a murderer has walked the streets for 4 years, he also should be ashamed to show his face anywhere after allowing that young man to be murdered by the prisoner Mr. Sturch was responsable for keeeping in jail.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 01:26 PM
It's pretty funny though, I am a former officer from the Bryan County area and I seen how bad the jail's really were. It was Sturch's fault along with the commissioners and they had the guts to blaim the female State jail inspector that she was picking on them, it was not her fault it was Bryan Countys fault.

Posted by: ARKIE Location: Colbert on Aug 19, 2008 at 10:31 AM
The runoff is the 26th of this month, Question for Mr. Brown: If an officer under your supervision was traveling to fast down a dirt road, near Caddo, on a non emergency call, and hit and killed a good-horse, totaled a Crown Vic, and was injured severely himself, plainly there was no reasonable need for to much speed, Sir, would you hold that offecer responsable? Also, an officer speeding through Calera, with no emergency lights and causes an accident involving a civilian, totaling another Crown-Vic, would you hold that office responsable? Also, if your Jail Administrator let a known dangerous prisoner; ordered held without bond, and upon releasae he murdered someone, would you hold yourself and your JA responsable? Thank you Sir, I think the citizens should hear from you on these questions.

Posted by: Yawning Location: BCSO on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:57 AM
Yep; we have many good men in blue, however we have no ledership and very few good men that are in BCSO Brown Uniforms.

Posted by: Deputy Sore Nose Location: BCSO on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:54 AM
You deputies & JA on here blogging and showing the color of your nose, instead of working. You all are scared to death that your Good-Buddy Sturch will loose and then where can you find a salery setting at Choctaw Casino while you are supposed to be working?

Posted by: To Voter Location: BCSO on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:45 AM
Yes John I recall all of the escapes from February 18, 2007 until now, when Mr. Sturch bragged on KXII TV that he was heavily Involved in the jail operation, from that date. Also that is the timeline when Mr. Sturch allowed a prisoner ordered held without bond to leave the jail and murder Mr. York. Now that is a good morel man, if he had one ounce of morels he would take responsibnlity for that murder and the Beaty murder that he totally botched by non leadership. Okay, lets talk about escapes and releases from the jail. If you want to; we can also talk about the contraband cell phone business that was the ground for Mr. York's murder. Sheriff how does cell-phones and drugs get into a Sturch supervised jail? LOL waiting for an answer.

Posted by: VOTE FOR BROWN Location: Durant on Aug 19, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Charles Bush....why are you making a comment about BRYAN County election when you live in TEXAS? Please keep your mouth shut because you apparently have no idea what you are talking about. I, along with my entire family, will be voting for Roy Brown. Please everyone get out and vote for a change in Bryan County. The Sheriff has done nothing for the county but harm and he just needs to retire!

Posted by: Bob Norton Location: the 15% on Aug 19, 2008 at 08:12 AM
Hello, Hello, Mr. Bush are you there? Please don't speak for all of the Bryan County citizens, many reasonable voters want a new sheriff, and Mr. Brown, is a Profesional Law Enforcement Administrator, anyway, my vote alone is going to kill your vote so our vice will not count. Mr. Bush as for the silly remark you made about Mr. Browns tenure as DPD Chief' well Sir, that is the only reason I got behind Mr. Brown, because that proves to anyone that has knowledge of how supervision and leadership works that he is a Great Leader. He was making the Lazy Employees earn ther keep and they did not like to work. Great Job Mr. Brown. The BCSO is in the same shape, no one is working, 85% are setting doing nothing, the others that will work have no leadership to guide them. That is why Sheriff Sturch by non leadership by his JA is responsable for a prisoner in his jail murdering Mr. York. Now Sir Bryan County deserves a Profesional Sheriff, we don't have him now.

Posted by: voter Location: Bryan County on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:35 AM
Bryan County voter, if you actually remember most of the escapes happended when the jail was ran by the jail trust authority. And billy bob dilhole is just a prime example of why education is so important, and the lack of it in our county. Of course there are trained Administrators that have morel values! Bill Sturch is one of them. Im voting for Sturch because he is the best person for the job.

Posted by: Billy Bob Voter Location: Middle of Nowhere on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:28 AM
I for one and voting to keep Mr. Sturch! He was done a wonderful job for the county. A job that is very difficult under the budget constraints the inbreds of this county provide. roy brown could not even handle his position as chief of durant pd. He would be better suited working for one of the many fast food resturants or as a door greeter at walmart. Oh wait,,,maybe he could get a job as bar tender at the country club, now there's a job he might can handle.

Posted by: yawning Location: Bryan on Aug 19, 2008 at 07:01 AM
Of course there's low turnout. Only a few deep thinkers like these boys are stirred up, and most figure either one will do a passable job with little difference between the two. Billy Bob Leadhead, the sheriff is a Navy man. Folks should take the incident you mention into consideration, though they likely won't from you with that ridiculous statement about his moral values. There aren't many better men I've ever known. And Charles, maybe you can enlighten us as to why the city administration in Durant kowtows to the FOP. We've got a lot of good men in blue, but when they get together in their little union meetings they seem to be a big group of crybabies.

Posted by: Charles Bush Location: Texas on Aug 18, 2008 at 08:08 PM
Roy Brown needs to be aware that the people of Bryan county don't want him as sheriff, He should have got the HINT when he was FIRED from the Durant Police Dept.

Posted by: Billy Bob Buck Location: Carpenters Bluff on Aug 18, 2008 at 07:31 PM
You are right Mr. Sturch,a prisoner in your custody ordered held without bond, was put on the street May 22, 07 by your hand picked jail administrator; and he murdered someone, this is an accurate example of the present BCSO policy of putting people people on the street's. And please Sheriff, correct the Media you sure aint no Army Officer, they are trained Administrators, and have moral values.

Posted by: bryan county voter on Aug 18, 2008 at 07:07 PM
bill sturch said that he could manage a budget and put people on the streets. I don't know about the budget but i do agree he can SURE ENOUGH PUT PEOPLE ON THE STREET just check the escapes from bryan county jail.
