Carter Co. Standoff Ends in Arrest

4-29-06 - One man was arrested after an overnight standoff at a home on Apple Street in Healdton. Police were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. after the suspect's family members called police and reported that the man threatened to make a pipe bomb.

The Carter County Emergency Response Team and OHP bomb squad were called to the scene. Sheriff Harvey Burkhart says the team attempted to contact the man inside several times, at one point tossing a “throw-phone” through a window to talk to the man.

Around 1:30 a.m., the Healdton police chief says the Emergency Response Team and bomb squad entered the home after obtaining a search warrant.

Thirty one year old Gabriel Callis was detained and then booked into the Carter County Jail.

The Healdton Police Chief says Callis faces several charges; including a charge for assaulting an officer. He says Callis kicked a police officer in the head and then spit on an officer during transport to the Carter County Jail.

According to Healdton police, no bomb was found in the home, but some materials were taken into evidence. Police are still investigating.
