GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- The Sherman-Denison Metropolitan Planning Organization held a public meeting Wednesday night to talk about what's known as the "691 Corridor."

Future developments around Highway 75 and FM 691 like the new Texoma Medial Center will likely mean extra traffic and congestion.

That's why the Sherman- Denison MPO and TxDOT are coming up with proposals to cater to those developments.

“We’re going to need to do improvements to 691, widen out, add extra lanes and probably some signalization at the intersection. That all needs to be put into work pretty quickly so we can be ahead of the curve when traffic gets there," said Kevin Harris, area engineer for TxDOT.

Wednesday's public hearing drew several dozen residents who gave input on the plans including one landowner who will lose part of her farm to the planned expansion.

"I'm for helping the community and for the roads to be better," said Ernestine White, a resident in Sherman.

White does not seem to mind the changes, which planners hope will happen sooner rather than later.

"We are trying to be proactive in that intersection rather than when the congestion gets there," the chairman of the MPO Committee said.

Harris estimates the total cost for construction is around $3 million.

It is too early to tell what drivers could expect. If the project is approved, Grayson County Commissioner Gene Short, who is also the chairman of the local MPO, says construction is expected to begin next year and could last at least six months.

Geez, last I checked folks from both Sherman and Denison went out to Grayson County Community College, which has FM691 running past it. I know the highway is expanded out there, and they're working on it at FM1417, so I see no problem with the expansion going eastward to Texoma Parkway. This is going to benefit Denison and Sherman, as well as all of Grayson County in this area. Growth is taking place there whether we like it or not, or acknowledge it or not, so the sooner we get the infrastructure down to allow for this expansion the better off we'll be, and the fewer problems down the road (pun not intended). As for Ms. White- good on ya! We need more people with your attitude. Let's keep the Denison-Sherman rivalry to the athletic fields and get this thing DONE!

i think forums such as this one is one of the many reasons why this community will not only survive but thrive.we are all in this togather no sense in bashing each other this is all texoma land and i want to thank kxii and the wonderful staff for a job well done and i would like to thank personaally the man that works tirelessly to make sure all the comments and opinions of people get posted,this man works very hard sorting what can and cannot be posted after all even though kxii promotes freedom of speech they have to make sure to leave stuff out that the younger audiance shoul not read....thanks again kxii and go texoma.

Good luck Sherman my butt! Denison is the one's that got the ball rolling. Sherman told Denison and the County it wasn't their problem. They are such team players (as you can see)!

They need to get some stop lights up on the Hwy 75 and 691 intersections before someone gets killed. Vehicles should not have to sit at a stop sign for 5 minutes waiting to go. What is the delay?

Yes the changes would be better recieved sooner than later. Any kind of construction will effect the traffic at Grayson County College, especially if they are going to be widening the road or adding signals at Hwy. 75. I hope that they are able to be proactive instead of reactive like they are in Denton. Good luck Sherman!
