ARDMORE, Okla. -- As students all across Texoma are now back in school, education and the economy take center stage. High gas prices are a problem that every school district faces. For one small Carter County school, that talk has led to real action. Robin Beal reports from Ardmore on the scheduling solution of that school.

If you have never heard of the Ardmore Adventist Academy, it is a small campus north of Ardmore with a "country schoolhouse" atmosphere. They manage to stay under the radar for the most part, with few of the problems big city schools face.

But one problem they could not escape is sky high gas prices. So now, they only go to school four days a week. With some staff and students having 20 or 30 minute drives one way, cutting out two trips a week can add up.

Principal Stephen Dennis says the benefits of a four-day week are helpful to parents in tough economic times.

"I find the parents find especially now of course with the way the gas prices are right now, saves a lot of money. And I know the public school systems that do this in other parts of the country they're busing out, like for the country schools and the consolidated type situations, that really saves a lot of money."

Dennis says the second benefit is more class time. The kids attend school from 8:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, so he has more time to concentrate on the complex subjects in one sitting.

Even though the Ardmore Adventist Academy is too small to have a fleet of school buses, the potential savings have the ones who are doing the driving—the parents—excited.

I have lived in this area all my life. Where is this Ard. Adventist Academy?? I have never heard of it. How many kids go there? The only "Adventist" I know of is the hospital that closed.

Schools need to be year round. American students are getting farther and farther behind the curve of other countries. Not to mention, our schools push for so many below average standardizations, that most of today's students don't find their true calling/career. Instead, they are pushed to do the “norm” and hide any differences or creativeness that could the class goal. I have two sons, one will conform to the "norm" because that is his style, but my other son is definitely going to give the system and the teachers a challenge. His IQ is so high, the "norm" just won't do. He does not need additional time off. Once he is old enough he will be attending college classes while attending middle/high school. Hopefully, we can get him out of the middle/high ASAP so he can receive some real challenges.

Wish all the schools would do something like that!! I agree with Beth, schools are not babysitters, you hire a babysitter. Those teachers are there to TEACH our children!! Marvelous idea with gas prices being so high!!!! I do work M-F 8:5 and still like it!!I pay daycare daily anyway, why not for less time 4 days and a little longer on Friday???

KXII is only stating the direct quote from the principal. Hence the quotation marks!

First of all...Schools are NOT baby sitters. They are not here to baby sit our kids. They are here to educate our kids. Not every parent works M-F 8 to 3:30. I think it's a good ideal. I know it will help most parents. But like every thing else you can't please everyone.

I dont think he typed the quote uiop!! Im pretty sure kxii did and messed on their grammar!!Who honestly typed this paragraph, or did he really say it this way? You may want to visit English 1101 again at the nearest college buddy, or find a new profession. Who's going to babysit all those kids on that one day off? Do all principals start sentences with "And"?
