PURCELL, Okla. (AP) - A McClain County judge sets an Aug. 22 preliminary hearing for a man accused of killing his 10-year-old neighbor in an alleged cannibalistic plot.
Kevin Ray Underwood wasn't present for the brief hearing in Special District Judge Gary Barger's chambers today, and neither were the parents of slaying victim Jamie Rose Bolin.
The 26-year-old is charged with first-degree murder for April 12 killing. Jamie Bolin's unclothed body was found two days later in a rubber tub in his bedroom closet.
FBI agents found Jamie Bolin after Underwood drew their suspicion during a checkpoint set up around the town.
The child had deep lacerations in her neck, which investigators allege was Underwood's attempt to cut her up and eat her flesh. Meanwhile, Jamie Bolin's father, Curtis, cleared out the Purcell Park Apartments unit where he and his daughter lived. The move required him to pass by Underwood's apartment.
Bolin says all he could do was pretend the apartment wasn't there.
