FANNIN COUNTY, Tex. -- Two children's programs have had major budget cuts this year. Staff and volunteers at the Fannin County Children's Center are trying to figure out what they are going to do after a very drastic budget cut that caught them completely off guard.

"Things are changing, but the one thing that is going to remain constant to them is their CASA volunteer," said CASA volunteer and Board President Melanie Grammar.

One thing that is not constant is the budget for programs like Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The budget for the Children's Center and its programs has been cut by $10,000. That money comes from fines and fees paid by criminals in the justice system, but now that money is going toward other federal programs. The other program is The Children's Advocacy Center that deals with children involved in criminal cases.

"We run a pretty lean ship here, and we don't have much fluff in our budget so the main thing I think we are going to look to do is raise additional funding from the community," Sandy Barber, Executive Director of Fannin County Children’s Center.

Volunteers like Melanie Grammar and 30 other volunteers work hard to keep the center alive to make sure every child's needs are met.

"I know I just have to put a little but more out there on the table, and I need to help other people understand what we are doing,” said Grammar.

“We are volunteers. If we weren't, we might not be here. Budget cuts do everything.”

Barber also said, "We're hopeful that we can make up the difference and that we don't have to cut into the essential services that we are providing for kids."

The center is holding a fundraiser and auction called Justice Is Served.

Yes, who needs to help the needy, poor, hungry, neglected and abused children in our area? Oh, right...we do! What are you thinking Dale in Ada? You need to wake up and pick on someone other than children.

Yes, let's just tell the kids nobody cares about them anymore, tough luck. Great idea! Dale, I think you should personally be the one to hand down the bad news to the kids. I'm sure your social skills are as wonderfully charming as your obvious "Christian" ethics and morals. Those who are unlucky enough to be poor, neglected, hungery, abused, etc.. You are on your own! I am sure the country would be better off?! WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This program is also supported by grants and public and private donations. One of their larger grants didn't come through this year, thus the funding cut. If you want to start pointing fingers about the SORRY state of the union (RECESSION/ DEPRESSION), start with the once Republican run HOR and the Bush Administration, there's your sign! Leave the kids alone and go pick on someone your own size!

When people realize that we shouldn't be depending on Federal programs for anything, we will be a lot better off. Return to the Republic that we once were, and let us take care of our own, without federal interference. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but if the federal government gets involved, things only get worse. Besides including programs like these the federal government is running at over 70 trillion dollar deficit. America as we know it, will soon come to an abrupt end. People would see it if they would quit depending on mainstream media to report "news". Wake up sheep, before it is to late. Turn off your televisions and think for yourselves for once.

Cut funding for the kids, but build more jails. Yeah, we got our priorities straight...

What entity decided to cut funding? Are we sure it's not an accounting mistake?
