SHERMAN, Tex. -- Three people were struck by a vehicle Thursday morning at the Tyson plant in Sherman off U.S. Highway 75.
According to Sherman police, three Tyson employees were standing outside the plant in the plant parking lot around 9:30 Thursday morning waiting for rides when a black Nissan veered off the service road, crossed the median, and drove through a fence, hitting the victims where they stood.
Three people were injured, all employees at Tyson. Of those three victims, two had to be flown to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The other victim, Li Daw, was taken to Wilson N. Jones Medical Center in Sherman. No word on their conditions at this time.
Five people were in the car that struck the employees. None of them were hurt, but police say everyone involved, including the five inside the vehicle, is an employee of Tyson. The three victims had just attended a training session. The five in the car, including 23-year-old driver Henry Bawihrin, were going to an orientation at the plant.
"The black vehicle was traveling southbound on the control road, drove through the median, through the fence and struck the individuals that were sitting underneath a tree," Sgt. Bruce Dawsey of the Sherman Police Department said.
All eight people involved are from Burma (now known as Myanmar), an Asian country south of China and northwest of Thailand. Police say that created a language barrier at the scene.
"They're having to work through translators right now to retrieve the information so there's a little bit of lag in the information coming through," Sgt. Dawsey said.
In a statement to KXII, Tyson corporate officials said:
"We’re saddened by this morning’s unfortunate accident and are cooperating with local authorities as they investigate what happened."
Tyson is known for employing foreign workers at their plants across the country. About 20,000 Burmese refugees have come to the United States since the military Junta takeover, but it is unknown how many of those live in Sherman.
The car stayed lodged in the fence for hours as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
