GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. -- Grayson County Commissioners are tightening their belts when it comes to the budget. They are now looking at less expensive ways to pave the roads.

Crews are using red granite until asphalt supplies are higher and prices are lower. Oil prices rose 60%. Then the oil company that supplies the county’s asphalt declared bankruptcy, so commissioners are repairing the roads without oil this year.

Commissioners are optimistic red granite will be a useful alternative.

"You can't even get the oil, but when you can get it, it's $50,000 a mile. I can do this for about $10,000, and it's the next best thing," Grayson County Commissioner Jackie Crisp said.

Commissioners hope to overlay the roads with oil asphalt once the supply goes back to normal.

To taxpayer in grayson- his last name is WALDRIP. Just so you know. I don't believe they actually pave a road with crushed red granite so much as dump & grade it like they do crushed limestone. Calling that paving sounds like a messed-up fact by the reporter.

who do you have to pay off to get a paved road. I eat dust daily, and don't want to waste my money

Exactly how do they pave roads with red granite, and without asphalt? I thought the asphalt held the gravel/road surface together?

red granite would be a great alternative to the giant white rock, that fills my house with dust and punctures my tires.Not to mention the shredded rebar the county has put on my road that JOHNNY WALTHRIP says is not possible, but had Grayson county prisoners walk my road with 5 gallon buckets picking it up. If he didn't put it there then why bother. I have recieved no help from him and I pay the same as everyone else.
