DENISON, Tex. -- U.S. Highway 75 in Denison was shut down just after nine o'clock Thursday morning after a one-vehicle rollover, backing up traffic for some time.

The accident happened just after nine o'clock Thursday morning on north bound U.S. 75 near the Crawford Street exit.

Investigators believe the woman driving swerved for some reason, hit the guardrail, and then flipped her vehicle.

The driver was taken by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas.

No word on the extent of her injuries. Her name was also not released.

You guys might have a Level 3 Trauma center in EITHER hospital if they could get some cooperation from the specialties typically needed in trauma situations.(Neuro/Ortho/IM/Gen Surg) Both hospitals have tried over the years and, primarily because most trauma patients have little or no insurance, and the amount of on-call time would increase, those specialists refuse to cooperate. In their defense, though, it is a double edged sword...unfortunately, those patients with little or no insurance are statically the most inclined to sue the physicians. A trauma center not only changes what can be accepted in the ER, it changes what must be available in the OR and critical care units, as well. So, as is the case with most things, it's not as simple as it sounds.

Everyone keeps asking why Parkland why not WNJ/TMC.Neither WNJ/TMC have a trauma certificate. (Meaning certain doctors have to be onsite 24/7.)They can take minor trauma, but if it's something that seems like it will require instant surgery other than orthopedic, it means it will be sent to Parkland a well known and amazing trauma center. There are always exceptions to the rules, i.e. the bus accident where patients needing surgery went to WNJ as well as other surrounding trauma facilities. So since this isn't a meteropolitian city a trauma center in some aspects is not needed since another is so close. The increase of accidents on US 75 might prompt one of the hospitals, perhaps the new hospital to be trauma certified to better serve the people of Grayson Co. As far as the helicopter rides go, they are expensive but there is an insurance policy you can purchase that can help lower the cost of that - it's provide through life star and care flight.

TO CONCERNED: I AM A MEDIC AND I KNOW WHAT THOSE GUYS GO THROUGH. THERE IS ACTUALLY PROTOCALS THAT WE HAVE TO FOLLOW AND IF THE INJURIES ARE TO A CERTAIN EXTENT THEN WE SEND THEM TO A LEVEL ONE TRAUMA CENTER WHICH IS BY STATE GUIDELINES.

I too am concerned about the # of incidents in the area AND the # of helicopter flights to metroplex area hospitals. If the patients ARE indeed in need of that level of care, then I am certainly all for it. However, I had also wondered about whether or not some of these cases warranted such measures. I am NOT indicating that the measures were unwarranted (as I was not there) but certainly hope that this is not one of those situations where we go overboard because of the availability of the technology. As was stated previously, there is MUCH expense involved with medical care and the cost of being flown to the metroplex quickly increases both the medical bills and the cost to the families that need to care for their loved ones. I would definitely say that this is a matter worth looking into!

Has anyone noticed that here lately whenever there is an accident that all the injured are getting flown south for treatment. Rumor has it that our area EMS do not feel TMC & WNJ can handle trauma cases anymore?? How about an KXII story on that! $10,000 helicopter flights are hard to swallow for us poor folks!

Brian, what is it of your business on where tehy take her and how far her loved ones have to travel, I wouldn't go to TMC or WNJ, knowing there is a better hospital at Parkland that can take care of you
