Bells Man Sentenced to 75 Years

05-11-06 - A jury found a Bells man guilty Wednesday of aggravated sexual assault of a child and sentenced him to 75 years in prison. Back in October of 2003, the Grayson County Sheriff’s Department received a tip of a sexual assault on a 12-year-old girl.

The girl told her mother that 57-year-old Howard Cravens, a family friend, had sexually abused her several times in the past weeks. An investigator took the girl for a forensic interview and to be evaluated at Texoma Medical Center. Some of the assaults supposedly took place in Sherman, which prompted the investigation in the case of Sherman PD.

An investigator with the police department found a calendar in the girl’s room that documented journal-type entries when Cravens had encountered with her. Cravens was on parole after being sentenced to 99 years on felony drug charges. The DA offered him a deal, but he would not take it.
