SHERMAN, Tex. – After suddenly closing over the weekend, Anytime Fitness members can now access Nautilus in Sherman and Denison.

The workout facility owner tells KXII he simply could not pay the bills. Ownership transferred membership to Nautilus on Monday. The owner also says he sent a letter to all members on Friday and that a notice will be put on the door.

This comes after many members arrived to work out over the weekend only to find paper covering the doors and windows on Sunday at the gym. The doors were locked, and a small pile of member's belongings were out front.

*Below is the letter sent out by Anytime Membership ownership to its members:

This message if for STEVE from Sherman. So who is the owner of the new Aspen Athletic CLub? It doesn't appear to be a local person as you have stated. I was given the name of an individual that is not a local and use to be a VP for 24 hour fitness.

Posted by: Julie on Oct 5, 2008 at 11:18 PM
I joined Nautilus last week and I love it! I wish I had done it long ago. The staff have been very friendly and helpful at my location and the gym is super clean.

Posted by: Sherri on Sep 13, 2008 at 05:42 PM
Can anyone tell me if they know if this new club Aspen has closed any clubs? I have a friend that lives in Tulsa who said she thought they opened a club in downtown and closed it after 6 months. I do not want to be burned again.

I go to Choctaw now because it is free, but Jimmy is a great guy and Nautilus was worth the money when I went.

Posted by: Mork Location: Ork on Sep 12, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Well, for once Judge & I agree. I was a member of Anytime Fitness and they didn't send me to Nautilus, they sent me to Crispy Cream! Good one Judge ;) And Jana, I'm not afraid to say who I am - I'm Mork from Ork and I approve this message.

I will sign up to sue Anytime Fitness. Just say when & where!

Very typical of Brent Irish, owner of Anytime Fitness Sherman and Moore, OK, to not hold up to his obligations and responsibilities to his members & employees. He is opening another gym in OKC. This is where the equipment is going and why he closed Sherman. He not only, screwed his members, he did not even pay his employees their wages earned. I am pleased to see such a crook leave our community. He does not deserve to live here. I wonder how he would feel to show up for work and be locked out & closed up?????

Posted by: Steve Location: Sherman on Sep 10, 2008 at 05:22 PM
WORD TO THE WISE-Take a good look at the new gym going next to Gander Mountain. Look closely at their contract and who locally owns this new gym.

Posted by: Jill on Sep 9, 2008 at 06:47 PM
I am a member of Nautilus and not changing. I love being able to workout at all of the locations. The lady club is great! Also, I've seen too many clubs close and Nautilus always remains.

Posted by: Terri Location: Sherman on Sep 9, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Nautilus is an awesome gym. The have continuously tried to grow to meet the demands of people wishing to live a healthy lifestyle. Jim and Teresa do care about their members. They always have and always will!! As anyone knows you can't please 100 percent of the people you are trying to serve. If you can just please the majority of your members you are accomplishing a great deal. If you've never tried the aerobic classes at Nautilus, you are missing out on a wonderful deal. I have talked to people who have traveled all around the United States and have yet to find an aerobic program as good as the one we have at Nautilus.

Posted by: Redneck Woman Location: Sherman on Sep 9, 2008 at 04:12 PM
Jim of Nautilus, Please open a facility like the one that was by Hastings, the ladies only workout place. I understand you've taken it over... but, please keep it similiar to the way it was. The dressing area was beautiful, elegant and it always smelled good. Like a spa! We forgot we were in a gym. Please don't let it start smelling like feet. There's a reason we ladies like it separate. Many, many reasons.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Howe on Sep 9, 2008 at 02:33 PM
So, can we go to other centers in that nautilus group that is advertised or do we have to go to Sherman or Denison?

Posted by: Adam Location: Sherman on Sep 9, 2008 at 01:44 PM
I feel bad for the members of Anytime Fitness. I think they should have the choice to cancel if they are not satisfied with Nautilus. I have been with Nautilus for 3 years, ever since I moved to Texas. In my opinion, Nautilus is the best workout facility in the area. I used to be a personal trainer and have been around competitive powerlifting, and bodybuilding for the last 10 years. They made huge improvements when competition moved to town, any business would. That's the real world. I'm glad Aspen is coming to town because competition only means Nautilus will continue to improve. Nautilus is locally owned and the management and employees are extremely polite and helpful. Unless something better comes along, Nautilus has my membership.

Posted by: Patrick McGinnis Location: Sherman on Sep 9, 2008 at 12:45 PM
There is an indoor baseball training facility opening in the same building as Gander Mountain along with a new gym/health club. I am a member at Nautilus, and just wanted to clear up any confusion about what is opening adjacent to Gander Mountain. The baseball facility should be open by late October depending on the date that the building is completed, and ready to be occupied.

Posted by: Clair Location: Sherman on Sep 9, 2008 at 11:20 AM
I was an Anytime member and I'm elated that Nautilus has my membership. I was a member there before and I wish I'd never left. You can tell most of these emails are from sour-puss Ex-anytime members who have a reason to be mad, but you are mad at the wrong place. Nautilus didn't take you money and leave. All the happy Nautilus members don't have a reason to read this column, so the survey / blogs appear one-sided. For the same price I was paying before, I now get much more for my money! I'm happy!

Posted by: Rebecca Location: Sherman on Sep 9, 2008 at 11:11 AM
The new Gym moving in between West Asset Management and Gander Mountain is called Aspen Athletic Club. They originated in Iowa, opened several gym's in Oklahoma and are now expanding to Texas. Check them out on the Web. I'm looking forward to this new workout opportunity. They will have a pool at this new location as well.

For those of you who keep saying there isnt a gym going in next to Gander Mountain, it is a gym, they have an office set up next to Mr. Jim's Pizza and Blockbuster and are already accepting memeber applications at that office. They may also be opening a temporary gym somewhere until the location next to Gander Mountain is open.

ya know - your complaint isn't taken seriously if you aren't adult enough to post your name. If you really want to take a stand don't be afraid to tell who you are. Otherwise quit your whining

Posted by: Ashley on Sep 9, 2008 at 08:42 AM
It isnt a new gym by Gander Mountain. It is an indoor batting cage/practice baseball facility.

As part of the ownership that has operated Nautilus since 1987 I can truely say that all we've ever done is try to give the very best in fitness services that we could afford. It's easy to say we've never cared about our customers when you haven't been in our shoes. You ever sold something special to you, just to pay taxes? Been there, done that. I really Sympathize with the owner of Anytime, and the gut-wrenching decision he had to make. Competition is good, we've improved steadily over 22 years. Were you there when I opened at 5am and didn't leave until 10pm? Ever done that? Did for years. As far as service goes, we are constantly trying to improve, as our recent acquistions prove. We don't do it because we have to, we do it because we love it, and we want the best we can offer our customers. Our record shows we've got many loyal customers who have appreciated every single move. We welcome the Anytime members with open arms. Say what you want, but we've always given it our best.

Posted by: Anytime Member Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:23 PM
We were also told by the finance company that we couldn't withdraw but I don't think they can hold you too that. I am still going over everything in my contract. I have also been told there is a lawyer in town that is getting a list together of people that want to go forward with a lawsuit. The new club coming to town is going to be nice but how long will they stay or will Nautilus just buy them out too. I'm being told that the man that owned Anytime had very poor managers and it was very poorly managed.

Posted by: citizen Location: sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:00 PM
That is indoor batting cage's going in next door to Gander Mountain not a health club

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:35 PM
Mainly, its because each contract they get someone to sign ABC Finiancial gives the money for that. You don't owe Nautilus or whatever club, you owe only the ABC group. Realistically, Nautilus could give a hoot. They got their money. All they really need is more people to join.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 09:18 PM
I work for an attorney and had him review the contract. Since they turned the contracts over to Nautilus they have us over a barrel. Isn't that convenient for Nautilus. Most of the people who worked out at Anytime were once members of Nautilus and couldn't wait to get away from the Nautilus atmosphere and here we are dumped right back to Nautilus. I don't care how many facilities they have, the people they have working for them could care less about you. There has to be some sort of option to opt of this we just have to find it.

Posted by: Stevie Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:52 PM
I want to see Shaunda and Jimmy do there stuff more often. They are a great couple and inspire me!

Nautilus Rocks! Keep up the good work guys, i am proud to be a Nautilus member! I just started playing tennis at there tennis center and there tennis pro's are really helpfull and got me started on the right foot. I had never played tennis before but am looking forward to learning more. I live in whitesborro so i am really excited about there new club getting close to home! Thanks Nautilus, byt the way i used to be an anytime member... what a sigh of relief

sounds like a few posts are from nautilus workers.nasty nautilus is a rat hole.i can't believe that there are't massive injuries from the old junk they have.they don't wanna help people....fhey just want your money.

Posted by: Derek Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:44 PM
I have been a member of Nautilus for the last 5 years and i have watched them grow and expand. I really love it there, they dont have the corporate gym feel, i worked out at a 24hr fitness in dallas for a while and that just wasnt my style they seem to really care about you at Nautilus. They have done alot to win me over the last 5 years, seems they never quit expanding

Posted by: Anonymous Location: sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:28 PM
This place still wants to take my money, because of a contract I sign. Thay didn't hold up their end of the deal.. Almost as bad as ENRON Thay want me to drive all the way to Denison to work out,why not Sherman?????

Posted by: Steve Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 05:02 PM
Anytime fitness wasnt bought out by Nautilus, it was just poorly run and couldnt make it. And Nautilus could care less about you, they didnt improve until they had competition. There will be a new gym in Sherman next to Gander Mountain opening in February thats 40k plus sq. ft. Hopefully they'll have better quality service than Anytime or Nautilus.

Posted by: Michelle Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 04:34 PM
Same thing happened with the women's facility I used to go to and I had hell getting it straight. I had been past my year membership so I could cancel and they kept telling me I could not and could go to Nautilus. I did not want to go to Nautilus. I finally got it cancelled and just now am getting credited for last month since it closed in July. It is amazing to me that by law they can switch you over like that if you are still under contract. I was told if I was under contract it was legal, but in my case I was NOT under contract still it just took a while to get it straight. It was a nightmare. I feel for everyone and I know how you feel. It stinks!

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 04:27 PM
An explanation would be nice...

Posted by: John Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:45 PM
IF Nautilus bought it out...They should have posted something on the door to reaassure "their new customers". It was a very poor decision just to move out in the night without explanation. Very typical of fitness centers, tanning salons, etc.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:35 PM
It seems that Nautilus only improves once competition arrives, not when the members need it. This new club is great for Sherman as it will consolidate the industry.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:32 PM
No, they got different investors. They didn't do anything until Anytime Fitness came along. How's Nautilus going to be now with no competition? Bet they slack off in a lot of areas now. Why would they not? No real big hurry now huh?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: howe on Sep 8, 2008 at 03:08 PM
So, Was the Anytime fitness bought out by Nauitlus? They say 9 locations now, does that mean I can go to A-1 fitness in Howe now? A-1 fitness says affliated with Nautilus now. Any info anyone? Stay tuned to KXII-TV and KXII.com for an update on this. We are working on it today....-Staff

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 02:49 PM
Guys, wake up, Nauitlus is locally owned and operated, they are the only ones that really care about you and fitness. I've watched them grow and put tons of money back into the Health Clubs. You want a womens only place,,,they got it. You want a 24 hr place they got it. Wanna swim or play Tennis,,ditto....I'm glad my health club gets better when competition is around instead of packing up in the middle of the night and leaving!!

Posted by: ..... Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 01:30 PM
well at least they gave us a heads up... i didnt want a membership with nautilus thats why i went with anytime fitness... great job guys

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 12:53 PM
I did my contract for Anytime Fitness and if this closed down, which it did, then I can opt out of it since there is no Anytime Fitness within 10 miles. Either that or get a lawsuit ready.

Posted by: Aaron on Sep 8, 2008 at 11:45 AM
Nautilus did not do anything until they got competition. Now its seems they bought them out.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:27 AM
This is just crazy that they can change your gym without anyone having a say so. I can't not stand Nautilus and this is my money and should have some say on if it is okay to transfer membership and if not, we should be able to cancel our contract.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Is the the health club that was going to move a location to Whitesboro?

Posted by: Member on Sep 8, 2008 at 08:43 AM
I called the company that handles the membership deductions and it seems that the memberships have been moved to Nautilus in Denison or the one on Texoma Pkwy. in Sherman. However, this is your only option if you are in the middle of your contract. They will not cancel your contract without fees and penalties. Call Nautilus for more details.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:49 AM
never pay ahead....health clubs go bust all the time!

Posted by: Aaron Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:41 AM
I got the bad news when I drove up there to workout and yeah...nothing was in the building at all. Disappointing to say the least. A door notice explaining what happened would have helped. Feels like National Health Studio all over again.

Posted by: Coffee lover... Location: Sherman on Sep 8, 2008 at 06:35 AM
I was meeting a coworker at Starbucks on Saturday morning at about 7 a.m. and there was a large moving truck loading all of the exercise equipment out of the facility. I sat there and watched for a second trying to figure out if they were getting new equipment or if they were just moving all the equipment out. They were moving all the equipment out!! I feel so bad for their customers. They all need to file disputes with their banks or credit card companies!!
