Ada Toddler Dies from Tick Bite

05-15-06 - Ticks are out in full force and now a 4-year old Ada girl has died of Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The Oklahoma State Health Department says the little girl, Katarina Wheat died on April 30th. She is the first Oklahoman to die from the fever since 1994. Ticks can infect humans if they remain attached to the body for two hours or more. Antibiotics fight off the fever, but you have to catch the fever within four or five days to treat it.

Health officials warn anyone working in wooded areas to use tick repellent and examine themselves two to three times a day for ticks.
