05-19-06 - The buildings are going up in Durant and it may be just the beginning. The city says they are currently experiencing an economic boom that could shape the future.
The Durant Industrial Authority says right now is the busiest they have ever been in their eight-year history and it is all about places. Places to live, places to eat, and places that ultimately mean jobs, money, and growth. From restaurants to hardware stores, the city of Durant is more crowded that it was just a few years ago a trend that shows no signs of slowing down, but several of speeding up.
A new 208-unit apartment complex was built in Durant and with new businesses like Chili’s and Lowe’s increasing sales taxes in the city by seven percent, the seeds of growth in industrial parks are being planted. The Industrial Authority is estimates that based on what they are seeing from the projects right now, about 400 new jobs will result.
