ADA, Okla. -- Two Ada women are now in custody on $1 million bond each after prosecutors say they tried to hire a hit man to kill another woman.
The intended victim was the wife of a local soldier deployed in South Korea. Now that soldier is also facing charges, and may already be in the custody of military police.
Tonia Mullins and Regina Hercules were arraigned by video hookup Monday afternoon. Twenty-six-year-old Michael Andrew Crawford is the serviceman currently on active duty.
All three now facing serious charges of solicitation of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder after investigators say Mullins and Hercules met with an undercover agent they thought was a hit man and offered him money to kill Crawford’s wife.
They say recorded phone conversations reveal that Michael Crawford himself was also in on the plot.
Authorities say they have talked to the intended victim in this case and say she is understandably in disbelief.
"I think she was stunned. I think she was still trying to get her arms around what had happened and understand it, and I think she was somewhat devastated that someone would put a dollar figure on her life," Pontotoc County District Attorney Chris Ross said.
That dollar figure is unknown at this time, as is what their motives may have been. The district attorney would not reveal those details Monday.
Both Mullins and Hercules remain jailed in separate facilities on $1 million bond each.
It is not clear when Crawford will be returned to Pontotoc County to answer to his charges.
