05-26-06 - The plans to build a second new elementary school in Sherman are underway. The Sherman School Board chose a site across the street from Binkley Park not only for its beauty, but functionality as the location for the new elementary school.
At a special meeting Thursday night, the board approved the purchase of 47 ½ acres between Highway 56 and Center Street, which is land that is currently occupied by a farmer’s cornfields. This is the second elementary school to be built, as part of the $77 million school bond that was passed last fall.
The school board president says easy road access, as well as sewage and electricity infrastructure also make it a prime location for future growth. Construction on the other new elementary school, at the Dillingham site begins this week.
The school board is hoping this project proceeds in a similar time line, with both schools open by the start of the 2007 school year.
The Sherman School District will close on the land purchase on June 1.
