DURANT, Okla. -- The Durant Downtown Streetscape Project is wrapping up its third phase, and at a special city council meeting Monday evening, the funding for phase four has been approved. Rashi Vats reports.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is helping to fund the Streetscape, which adds new concrete paving, sidewalks, benches, and trash cans.

City officials say 20% of the cost, about $500,000, will be paid for by the city. Durant mayor Jerry Tomlinson says will most benefit downtown Durant.

"It's very important I think that there be a vibrant downtown and our Streetscape Program has helped contribute to that, our Main Street program is second to none in our state, and I think that they do a great job," Tomlinson said.

City officials say since the council has approved the application for funding the fourth phase, construction could begin in early 2010 along Main Street.

I think that it is wasteful to spend this money on the downtown area. All traffic is towards Hwy 70 and 69. All the new business are not going anywhere downtown. I think it is sad and a waste of time and effort.

So if the city is paying for 20% who is paying for the other 80%?
