TOM BEAN, Tex. -- Eighty-five-percent of what is thrown away is recyclable. One Grayson County city is the first to introduce a new recycling program to help reduce that number.

The city of Tom Bean is the first ever in Grayson County to start what is called “the Blue Bag Program,” and city officials say it has been a huge success.

Tom Bean had a pilot program earlier this year to see the response the recycling would get. Shortly afterward in May, the city council approved to continue the Blue Bag Program, and organizer Cathy Pew says she has seen a tremendous response, getting 130 bags in just one month.

Pew says everyone in the community has been great with helping out.

“The citizens are concerned about the environment and wanting to recycle, so this is just an opportunity for them to do that.”

If you would like to find out more about the program, check http://www.tombean.net/ or call city secretary Cathy Pugh at 903-546-6321.

As a citizen of Tom Bean, I was delighted to hear that the Mayor and the City Council along with the city secretary working together to pull this effort off for the city. What a wonderful small town!

Of course, I will be surprised if my response to the staff person gets posted.

Staff: I did read carefully. When Sherman started their recycling program, it was a "new" program. Sherman is in Grayson county. That is like saying when I go out and buy a car, me telling everyone in the area that I am the first person in Grayson county to have a new car. (Totally incorrect, as you know.) How it should have been written in your story, if you had wanted to communicate correctly, would be "Tom Bean is taking part in a recycling program called "Blue Bag Recycling." They will be the first in this county (area...etc.) to participate in this program." But to say, "One Grayson County city is the first to introduce a new recycling program to help reduce that number," is completely misleading and false. So, I guess this is where I must say, in parroting you, "write and edit more carefully."

"One Grayson County city is the first to introduce a new recycling program to help reduce that number." Seems to me that comment is apocryphal. As has been already stated, Sherman has long since had a recycle program, making them the first city in Grayson county to introduce a recycling program. These reporters need to get their facts straight. The story said they were the first to have "a new recycling program" (meaning the blue bag program). Read more carefully. -Staff

I wish all towns would do this

I wish the city of howe would do curside recycling, it's to much waste to take all your recycles to city hall to dump off in a large bin, Pct#1 tried this and it didn't work. This is a great idea, way to go TB.

There are several towns in Grayson County Recycling. It says they are the first to do the "blue bag program". I am so glad to see the overwhelming response.

This makes it sound like no other city in Grayson County is recycling. Sherman has had a successful recycle program for years. It is unreal how much of our trash is recyclable. I used to have 2 of the big 100 gallon garbage cans that the City of Sherman issues. Now I can barely fill up one and I have 2 100 gallon recycle bins that I fill to capacity every two weeks. It is amazing how much landfill space we can save if we just all pitch in and do our part.
