SHERMAN, Tex. -- After more than four years of service, one of Sherman’s K-9 officers is retiring.

Six-year-old Oskar has been a major asset to the department, helping with criminal convictions of drug dealers in the area.

Oskar was diagnosed with a form of canine diabetes a few years ago. While his health is fine right now, it is his age that is affecting his ability to perform.

Oskar has had two trainers during his time with the department. He will live with the first one for the rest of his life.

The Sherman Police Department has ordered a new K-9. No word on when he will arrive. Sherman police have one other k-9 officer.

How wonderful that an officer can adopt the K-9, because having spent a lot of time with GS dogs I know how much stress the dog would have been under with the wrong owners.Wondering if the Police Dept helps with his medical expenses ?

After a police dog is retired, it is best to place him with an officer who has handled a K9. These are not your everyday pets, and there is always the risk of a bite. Having one of these retired police dogs a real liability. It is not wise to just put them with an ordinary citizen. Good Luck Oskar!!!!!!!1

COnsidering the training a police dog goes through, he may be better handled by his original trainer, or someone who has trained police dogs. Either way, Oskar should be in good hands. Wonder if he has his own trading card at Hot & Creamy donuts like the human officers have? (No, I'm not kidding)

Jess, yes the cops are the only one's to have them. They can be very dangerous in the wrong hands!

Wonder if they only allow cops to care for these dogs after they retire???
