ATOKA COUNTY, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has confirmed the 43-year-old man killed in a collision in Atoka County on Monday was an inmate at the McAlford Correctional Facility.

Ted Eugene Hess, 43, of Stringtown, and another inmate had been assigned to road maintenance earlier in the day. Authorities believe they were on their way back to the prison at the time of the accident.

The accident was caused by a chain reaction when one car slid out of control on the pavement and hit another vehicle, causing that car to cross into the westbound lane, slamming into the inmates’ truck.

The patrol says the drivers of two of the vehicles were pinned for about 40 minutes.

Troopers say the cause of the collision is under investigation but that the roadway was wet when the crash occurred.

"There's several vehicles involved, and we have to conduct the investigation to find out where the vehicles were at impact and where they were prior to impact to see what caused the accident," OHP Trooper Brandon Seward said.

OHP officials say they will be collecting evidence and that the investigation could continue the next six weeks.

I am also one of his nieces. I read these comments and just get sick at my stomach to know that so many people in this world do not have any compassion towards others. None of us deserve to live. If it wasn't for Jesus Christ, who died on the cross for our sins, we would all be headed to a devil's hell. I'm not going to let someone's unthoughtful comments bother me. What does bother me is that I think the people who write comments like that, are not children of God. I pray that you will find him as your Savior before it's eternally too late. As for Uncle Eugene, he's having a grand time in heaven with his mom and sister. I would like to thank those of you who did leave nice comments. They are well appreciated.

I am his family, his niece, and I loved him very much. He did do a lot of dumb things in his life, but he wrote my momma a letter the week before he was killed telling her that he had accepted Jesus as His personal Savior, and things would be differetn when he got out, he also left behind 5 beautiful kids, and 5 grandchildren, God has rested his soul, so let him rest in peace. He was always happy and loved his family very much, but we all make mistakes, and his life was cut short. But at least he at his real home now, no more mistakes, no worries, I love you, Uncle Eugene. God bless your family!

Big loss

Even the murderers, rapists, etc. HAVE SOULS. How they choose to live determines their fate. This man MIGHT have repented and might not have. Never-the-less, it was his time to go. Otherwise, he would not have died. BUT.........Jacob, who are you to judge?

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 8, 2008 at 09:18 AM
Jacob, I'm all for public hangings and old fashioned justice. But DID YOU KNOW THIS CASE OR EVEN THIS MAN?????? I'm sure he bled just like you would have. You are a creep!!!

Jacob, let me guess.....you're young (under 40) ........that seems to be the attitude of young people today..."Whatever suits ME and as long as I'M not affected, to hell with everyone else" You need a good bustin' for that insensitive remark!

I saw the wreckage and it was terrible. I go through there everyday about 3:45 and it so happened that I had to stay late at my job. I don't care if he was an inmate his life is over now. I still didn't hear about the person in the car. I saw both trucks and the car when I drove by. It was awful!!

What if that inmate was your family he was just out working to help keep the roads clean that you drive on. He did nothing to you he was someone's son. I am sure they don't look at it like HE JUST AN INMATE. HE WAS IN SOMETHING TO SOMEONE. have a little compation to his family.

it could have been a wreck that allowed him to escape too. I don't like the fact of inmates outside of prison anytime.

He probably has a family that loves him. Jacob, thank about what you have wrote. How would you feel if this was your family. You don't always agree with what someone in your family does, but you still love them. Please consider that he may have a Mom, Dad, or Children reading this site. Lets don't add extra hurt to them at this time. I don't know this man or anything about him, just felt that your comment was bad for his family if they should read these comments. Hope you never have to go thru something like this. I don't consider you a "smart a-s" as Anonymours stated, just that you were not really thinking when you wrote your comment. Please consider his family and how they are hurting.

Ok, so the Airman that was run over and killed in Waco, and the Major who died aren't news.. but inmates are? And yes. I feel for all.

to jacob..that is a terrible thing to say...most of the people who are inmates don`t deserve to be inmates..they are just because of our screwed up system and laws..would be better if it was some judgemental jerk than someone else

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 7, 2008 at 05:57 PM
JACOB your a smart a-s.

Better an inmate than anyone else

I know he's not pretty and I know he was a prisoner, but I still feel sorry for him. I looked up his record. It would appear he did a lot of stupid things, but I make a distinction between people who do things they shouldn't and people who habitually do evil things. God, rest his poor soul. His addictions are gone now, so maybe he can be at peace.
