SHERMAN, TX -- There is some economic news that’s good for a change this week, as gas prices are dropping to levels we haven't seen in a long time, under $3 a gallon.

The price of oil closed under $88 a barrel on Monday, making the average price for a gallon of gas below $3.50 a gallon nationwide.

But as you have probably seen across Texoma, the price is quickly slipping below the $3 mark. Prices under $3 a gallon have been reported on both sides of the Red River this week.

Experts say this could be the scene for a few more days, if not longer.

Tim Vanmeter of Durant says he has been paying more than $120 at the pump each time he fills up his pickup truck, but Tuesday it was different. He spent less than $70 to fill up.

Gas prices in southern Oklahoma were as low as $2.79 in some places Tuesday.

Customers seem much more relieved to be paying at the pumps now. Ever since this morning, gas prices jumped to$2.99 in Grayson County.

"Now it's great. I was going to the store and turned around and came back here. Saw it was $2.99 and though it was pretty good," Sherman resident Corey Rockins said.

Why the sudden decrease in price??

Fuel officials from Douglas Distributing say crude oil prices declined by more than $6 a barrel Monday, and now retailers are just passing along the savings to motor fuel consumers and that means lower prices.

"By passing the savings on to the consumers people are out driving more and filling their tanks up and traveling again which is good," Douglass Distributing president Matt Willeford says.

Officals from Douglass Distributing say we should expect the gas prices to continue to decrease slightly, but they are expected to go down even more before they plateau.

Judge, that was your problem in the first place you should have none that you were going to have to pay the taxes on it, before you signed up for winning it, did you not read the fine print

Bill in Denison, you are the type of person who is happy over $3 gas. What a joke. It is still 50% overpriced. BTW yes I do complain about winning. I won a vehicle and had to pay the taxes on it. Taxes on winning a $40,000 vehicle are so high that you have to sell it just to have the money to pay the taxes. Thanks to the government $40,000 in supposed winnings dwindled quickly. In reality you can only sell it for about $30,000 because you owned it and it is now "used". I lost $10,000. I have to pay the $13,000 to the government in taxes (36% on winnings). I lose another $13,000. My $40,000 prize has been reduces by $23,000. You are right. There is always something to complain about. :<>

Have you read the latest news, OPEC is trying to put a floor under the gas prices going down by reducing the supply. They should be in a lawsuit just like Kwik Chek for trying to set the price.

Gas was $2.75 at Lucky Stop in Cartwright this morning.

We all enjoy the price drop. 2.79 is the lowest I've seen in Durant. I predict, however, that we will see 2.50 or even 2.40 before the election. Imagine that it might help the election turn outs. It is all based on politics. Then we'll return to 3.50 or so for the next year. Watch and see.

Hey don't be happy with gas at $3.00,guys. Gas is selling on the market for in the $1.90 range and our gas inventory increase by 7.1 million barrels this week. Go to CNBC.com and check it out for yourself. So there is no reason for gas to stay anywhere close to $3.00 for very long. So don't let Mr. Douglas act like he is doing everyone a big favor. So everyone please keep pressure on media and the goverment to help lower prices.
