SHERMAN, Tex. -- A new energy plant will soon be in Sherman. The city council approved the move at Monday night's meeting.

Panda Energy will be building a 500-megawatt power plant on Howe Road west of the Tyson plant. The Dallas-based company will build a natural gas facility that will be one of the cleanest burning plants in the state.

The project will also bring several dozen high-paying jobs to the area.

Company representatives say it will be a North Texas project, from start to finish.

"It’s Texas, homegrown-type, natural gas. We got some of our employees actually living here in Sherman. In fact, the project manager of this project will be able to run the project from his house here in Sherman, Texas," Ralph Killian of Panda Energy says.

Panda Energy hopes to break ground sometime next summer.

This plant should use gas from the Barnett Shale deposit. And inasmuch as renewable fuels are a good idea, one wonders how many windmills it would take to produce the same amount of electricity as this plant is slated to put out. And I'm not against windpower at all.

Janette, I think there's a problem with your keyboard. Anyways, does Panda hire directly, or do they subcontract hiring to other companies like VOLT?

I'm disappointed, with all this push towards renewable resources I was really hoping it would be some sort of an alternative energy plant. At least its a cleaner burning, but still, it would be nice to move away from fossil fuels.
