CANEY, Okla. -- Several people were turned over to immigration officials Saturday morning, after spending Friday night in the Atoka County Jail.
Police say it all started with a routine traffic stop around eight o'clock Friday night in Caney, an Atoka County community north of Caddo.
When Caney Police pulled over a Dodge truck with a camper, they found the driver did not have a valid U.S. driver's license or the proper paperwork. On closer inspection ,the officer found 20 people in the vehicle, none of whom had identifying documents.
Officers say they are most likely illegal immigrants traveling from Laredo, Texas, to Arkansas. Authorities tell us several law enforcement agencies were required to deal with such a large group.
"I spoke to the driver, and he didn't have a valid driver's license, it was a Mexico license. and he didn't have the proper paperwork, so after I questioned him and talked to him we devised that there were about twenty persons in the car," said Caney Assistant Chief Jesse Yother.
The Atoka County Sheriff's Office and the Tushka Police Department assisted with those arrests.
