As high fire danger continues across north Texas and southern Oklahoma, almost all Texoma counties have opted to keep burn bans in place.

Most every county in the KXII-TV viewing area is under a burn ban. In fact, Bryan County, Choctaw County, and Pushmataha County, are the only in the region that are not under outdoor bans.

If you live in any of the counties in red on the map, outdoor burning is against the law.

I'M TIRED OF SO-CALLED COMMISSIONERS TELLING US WHAT TO DO. WE VOTED THEM IN TO REPRESENT US. THERE SHOULD BE NO SUCH THING AS A BURN BAN. COMPLETE NON-SENSE!!!!

Posted by: D. Burton on Mar 7, 2009 at 05:37 PM
When i was a teenager whoever got to the firetruck first got to go fight the fire. The hardest part was not falling off the truck, so why is it only a real man can do it now? I guess i was a man child.

Grow up all you paid and volunteer firefighters. Where was this burn ban years ago?? We didn't need it. Now people with some power think they can tell everyone else when to burn. Also all you firemen out there just remember one thing, you chose your career no one forced you to be a firefighter. So quit telling us your sad sack stories and do what your trained to do. Have a nice day!!!

Posted by: K Location: Sadler on Mar 4, 2009 at 11:02 PM
It takes alot of dedication and training to be a Firefighter/EMT. Unless you have went through the schooling or training or like FF-daughter/FF-wife has seen her parent and husband go through, then you will never understand. Then you have them inconsiderate people like Zyklon that is prob just some punk a#$ kid still living at home with Mommy and Daddy that just dont care about anybody but themselves. When you light your fire in the sticks and it gets out of control, then when the firefighters get done with their "basketball game" I hope they can get there in time to save your parents house.

LOL!! You people are funny! Taking everything that's said on a board so serious!!! It's amazing!

Boy'o'Boy, some people have the nerve to think they are untouchable when it comes to burning when under a burn ban and they want to post negative comments about Firefighters. You know the saying "it takes a real man to do that" well thats what I think of Fireman and EMT's along with Policeman. Zyklon B I would like to see you drag a 100lb body from a burning building and go back in for others and not once think about your own life being threatened and to go on a call at 1 a.m to put out some idiots grass fire like you would cause and not even think twice about going to do the job. Thats why people like you are inconsiderate of other people and what and whom they put their lives on the line for, no matter how big a burden on society they are. If you can't figure that one out, that burden would be YOU!!!!!!. Until you have been there done that don't say Firefighter play basketball 90% of the time.If that was the case I and alot of other wifes would sleep alot better.

The fact is not scared most people are to dumb to understand when buring outside will not cause a problem. Burn bans wouldn't be needed if people would not burn with 40 mph winds. Yes people are that dumb.

Posted by: Harold Location: edge on Feb 23, 2009 at 08:57 AM
I think it is comical that there are so many EPA officers and Environmental Officers working in these counties... such as the Mr. White mentioned by citizen. Meth is taking over the country but we can stop this rash of trash burning and leaking septic tanks.

Posted by: not scared on Feb 22, 2009 at 11:00 PM
Wow how did we all manage not to burn to death in the 70's and 80's without burn bans. I'm glad we have officials to tell us what to do all the time, cause were to dumb to figure things out for ourselves.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 22, 2009 at 07:52 PM
who issued the burn bans before the counties were counties and OK and TX were just territories?

Posted by: John Stryker Location: Grayson Co. on Feb 21, 2009 at 03:13 PM
Burn ban should have never been lifted in the first place, this just confuses the public and gives them another excuss of "I did not know"! Commissioner Short probably had some burn projects going on in his district for the new hwy 289 project. The others just went along with him and lifted it, another fine example of our county leadership (lack of). The week before it was lifted, every fire dept. in Grayson co. and three Bryan co. depts. worked a larged grass fire a Carpenders Bluff area. Lost a structure, lots of round bales of hay, and hundreds of acres burned. Whenin the past have the commisioners ever met on a Friday to discuss a burn ban after it was lifted on Monday, they had some burning to do and that is the only reason they lifted it for four days. They were burning in the Pottsboro area before the meeting was over.Must be nice to change the rules for your convience.

Hey all you folks talking about burning tires, oil, etc. I hope you know your comments are traceable by your IP addresses. Officer White (EPA officer) will have a field day with this if he catches on to this thread! Whatever happened to the idea of following the rules even when no one can see you? We wonder what's wrong with society????

I can do better than Zyklon B. I live in the city and I burn in broad daylight, most often brand new tires that I buy just to burn, and I stuff them with used oil filters and lead filled batteries. Sometimes I will even throw some old mercury filled thermostats on top for good measure, because they make some pretty colored flames. My IP address is 10.1.101.17 and my subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Remember big brother can always find you. Keep it up, I would love to see you identiy exposed. Guilty or innocent. ANOTHER THING. FIREMAN GET PAID FOR WHAT THERE WILLING TO DO, NOT WHAT THEY DO.

Anonymous, didn't your mommy ever tell you that not everything you read on the Internet is true? Have you ever heard the word "satire"? Maybe, just maybe, my writings aren't altogether honest and true. Maybe, just maybe, my writings are satirical. KXII has the right to not post my comments, and often they don't. I have even self-policed my comments and asked that some be removed. If KXII staff leaves a footnote to any of my comments asking that I back off, then I gladly will. Satire, sarcasm, fiction...all come into play from time to time.

Geez Anonymous, and what is my crime besides having an opinion?

Posted by: Harold on Feb 17, 2009 at 03:58 PM
Zyklon, I too learned to burn my old tires and anything that smokes badly after sunset. This works excellent. If you pour your old motor oil over your burn pile and let it soak, that helps it burn better also. In the years past, when one of my cows died, I'd pile old tires on it, pour about two gallons of diesel, and light. No bones, no nothing left to clean up.

Posted by: Anonymous on Feb 17, 2009 at 02:05 PM
To Zyklon: Everytime you send one of your stupid comments, your sending an ISP address to KXII. You keep running your head and I'll have some strings pulled for a search warrant for ISP addresses and figure out who and where you are. Keep it up wise guy

Wow, lots of haters in this world. Firefighters have the attitude that the rest of us are completely stupid; yet another "Anonymous" fails to read all my comments and thinks I am only negative. I never stated that I burn the items listed--I don't burn plastics because they leave nasty little wads that have to be thrown in the trash! Firefighter--thank you for your public service work. Wish I had a job where I played basketball 90% of the time and spent the rest watching building burn down.

Zyklon B I truely hope you catch your house on fire. It is ignorant people like you that provide me and all the other firefighters out there with "JOB SECURITY" You burning your trash such as plastics, rubbers, composites, and chemicals is what causes acid rain and smog. Sure what you burn probably won't make that much difference but just think if everyone had your same opinion and did what they want when they want. You sir should be thrown in jail because that is the reason we have laws so idiots like you can't do what they want when they want to and put the rest of us in danger.

Posted by: Zyklon B Location: The Voice of Reason on Jan 28, 2009 at 09:24 AM
Anonymous, don't worry about me--I won't get caught. I live in the sticks behind several locked gates down a private road and I burn at night. Think about it--the more trash and brush I burn, the less that takes up our landfills. Don't worry about the smoke causing global warming. The natural fires that covered this planet for eons are virtually non existent, and our manmade fires don't contribute nearly as much smoke. The greater worry should be things that we throw away such as plastics (the worst), rubbers, composites, and chemicals. These will be around forever.

Posted by: Zyklon B Location: The Voice of Reason on Jan 28, 2009 at 09:20 AM
Anonymous, I live way in the sticks behind locked gates and I burn at night, so chances of getting caught are slim. I am doing the land a favor by burning because the more trash and brush I burn, the less that takes up landfills. Don't worry about the global warming effects--natural fires that have covered this planet for eons are virtually nonexistant now, and our manmade burns don't put off nearly as much smoke. More damaging to the planet are the manmade materials we throw away, such as plastics (the worst), rubbers, composites, and chemicals.

Maybe you should check state laws because it is illegal to burn trash in the first place and I bet if you check with your neighbors they are grateful that you can't burn it. How many of you plan on paying for the damage that the fires you would like to start would cause? I'm sure none of you as the majority of the people that have time to sit around griping about everything on here are from the hills and unemployed. Get a job and get trash service. It's what most of the state does. For Zyklon B I hope you do start a fire and I hope you get caught. The fines along with this are mighty hefty. There is a reason for the people that set these burn bans. They actually take everything into consideration not just that you want to burn trash, leaves or a hog. It's for the safety of the public. It's so that we all still have our homes at the end of the day.

Hey how does a burn ban and a Winter Weather advisory work together. One would think that freezing rain might almost be as good as actual rain for controlling fires. I bet is must evaporate over flames and not ever fall to the ground. That has to be it.

i live in the country and i begged for weeks for the burn ban, people are careless and do not pay attention when they are burning. i have had several stupid neighbors burn outside and leave while there tras, leafs, etc, are burning. it's to dry and windy to burn. mulch your leaves ,hire a neighbors kid to rke for you,or start a compost. for gods sake this could save someones house or better yet someones life.

Posted by: bill burn man Location: denison pottsboro on Jan 3, 2009 at 05:13 PM
burn barrels or approved burn containers such as outdoor fireplaces dont apply to the burn ban.. but u can be responsible or liable for any damage caused by ur actions.

Posted by: Doctor Location: Denison on Jan 3, 2009 at 05:09 PM
You may consider a vacuum leaf collector for you leaf problem.. or possibly raking.. This could save your property by eliminating the fire load.

Mow the leaves, don't burn them! Mulch your yards! I don't have any trees in my yard that drop leaves, but I get all of my neighbors leaves. I mow and mulch OR compost them. Go green people!

I just had to respond to "Get spell check or an education". This hillbilly knows that you start a sentence with a capitol letter. I also know how to spell "they're". I also know that "I" is capitolized. You should also put a comma between "Happy new year" and "Nonetheless". You might also want to put a period at the end of your sentence. Lesson over.

Posted by: Jim Location: Bonham on Dec 8, 2008 at 09:43 PM
I like it the way it is. If the fire chiefs had the reigns we'd never get much burning done. The old folks burning trash, smokes being thrown out a car window and careless people cause a lot of these problems with wildfires. I'd like to see people have to attend a basic class on controlled burns and then maybe the careful folks wouldn't get penalized by those with no business burning. Also in the case of Fannin county we've had burn bans in place longer than necessary because the county was getting money by keeping it on. Part of what allows these fires to go crazy is a lack of prescribed burning to eliminate the fuel sources. And you can't just start dumping it all in the landfill either!

Posted by: grayson co ff2 on Dec 8, 2008 at 02:21 PM
Channel 12 needs to do a story on why the fire chiefs assoc cant be the ones to make that call on when a burn ban should be in affect, because the commissioner (cr_sp) people, not me elected does not care about the public, or his employees just ask one of them. All he wants to do is be on the news.It is correct that he waits till something bad happens to do something just look at the wreck they had in sadler. Then he put a bus stop in.

Posted by: Bill Location: Southmayd on Dec 8, 2008 at 01:26 PM
FF is right on,the Fire Chief's should be in charge of the burn ban,the Commisioners burn stuff all the time, weekly, and they dont want a fire ban, they do NOT have the safety of the citizens at the top of their list, never have and never will. The fire chief's deal with fires daily, it is ignorence and incompetience for the commisioners to decide when you can burn.Let the professionals do it,Firemen.

This is a good example of when you give the government power over your private property rights they go to extremes. In ten years we won't be able to burn anything...EVER! Except maybe our books about freedom.

Grayson is the last ALWAYS to have a burn ban because we follow suit. We wait until every last county in North Texas has one, all in all the commissioners follow the Forestry map and if they are up for election in that year, you can forget a burn ban. I think they should leave it up to the Grayson Fire Chiefs Association to make to call collectively as an organization that represents the county fire departments. Commissioners court will just sit back and wait, just like 2 weeks ago we had a 150-200 grass fire caused by someone burning, it took most of the county to put it out. But oh, let's just sit back and wait until someone get;s hurt or we lose someones house.
