Sign Theft Rising in Grayson County

08-18-06 - A rash of street sign thefts in Grayson County is costing taxpayers and causing frustrations for officials. County officials say more than 160 street name and traffic signs have been stolen in 2006.

At $50.00 per sign, crews are replacing the signs as fast as they can, only to turn around and have them stolen again. They worry that what could just be the work of people collecting signs for fun, or to salvage scrap metal, could have serious safety consequences.

Officials are considering posting stickers on each sign stating that it’s illegal to destroy county property and they are also working with authorities to make the crime punishable by jail time.
