CARTER COUNTY, Okla. ― Freezing temperatures painted an all too familiar winter picture of slick icy roads across most of southern Oklahoma.

Dozens of vehicles slid off Interstate 35 on Tuesday. Henry Keefer says he considers himself lucky.

“Well I more or less hit a real slick spot right up there on that hill and either over corrected or under corrected, but here I am."

Keefer had even taken preventive measures.

“I was doing about 55, and that's pretty slow.”

But Keefer wasn't the only one to fall victim to the slick roads. Less than a mile south on I-35 around mile marker 25, there was another single car rollover. Luckily, that driver walked away from the accident, too. But his truck, along with Keefer's, might be declared a total loss.

“It’s bad it's a shock. Economics are pretty bad right now," Keefer says.

The slick conditions affected more than just the interstate. Sleet and freezing precipitation made roads in Ardmore icy as well, which police said caused rollovers like one we saw off Rockford and 4th Street.

In all, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and local police say they received reports of at least 49 vehicles involved in weather-related accidents across southern Oklahoma counties.

While authorities say there were no serious injuries, icy roads can be unpredictable and dangerous.

Henry Keefer’s advice is simple.

“Just pull over, it's not worth the trip. It’s really not. Not today."

As of 6 p.m. the Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the roads are clear of any weather related accidents, but again they are saying be careful out there, especially overnight when there's a chance for roads to ice back over.
