Tax relief for Grayson Co. tornado victims
GRAYSON COUNTY, TX ― Residents still in need of home repairs due to last week's tornado could soon receive the assistance they need. Officials say the Grayson Central Appraisal District has stepped in to help residents get reimbursed for the value of their property.

GRAYSON COUNTY, Tex. ― Residents still in need of home repairs due to last week's tornado could soon receive the assistance they need.

Officials say the Grayson Central Appraisal District has stepped in to help residents get reimbursed for the value of their property.

Residents affected by last week’s storms are getting more help from the county. Officials say some can still benefit from what is left of their property.

"It’s not fair to pay 100 % taxes on the value of a house if your house is worth less than that, so this is a way we can hopefully help the Grayson County taxpayer recover a little bit from the storm," Grayson County Judge Drue Bynum says.

Bynum and other county officials are making sure affected residents wont have to pay more than their homes are worth come tax time.

To receive storm assistance, Teresa Parsons with the Grayson County Appraisal District is asking residents to complete a general real estate rendition form.

"Along with the form, if they could submit date stamped photographs as close to January 1 as possible. Estimates for repairs, estimates from their insurance, basically anything that will show the cost or extent of damage," Parsons says.

If completed by the January 1 deadline, residents may not have to pay for the decrease in property value of their homes due to the tornado and storms.

They will have time to protest if they feel their property is worth more or less.

"If some disagree with the value that we have placed on the property, particularly if it has damages that we are not aware of, then they need to call the office or they need to come in during formals so they can let us know what’s going on with the property," Bynum said.

Bynum says there is still a lot of work to be done. He plans on finding more ways to make this transition easier for property owners.

"We’ve gone out and done the asset evaluation. Now it’s time for us to get detailed and specific on what kind of help is available."
