The highways look a lot better Tuesday afternoon than earlier in the morning, when icy bridges and overpasses caused a slew of accidents on Texoma roadways. Here are our reports from both sides of the Red River.

Temperatures are expected to warm up a bit, but that does not mean that the roads are 100% safe.

In Sherman/Denison

More than 10 accidents were reported in just under an hour in Sherman. The cause of all was due to weather related conditions.

To name just a few, there was a rollover on Crawford Street at 75, another one on 691 and 75, and one on Loy Lake Road off of 82 in Sherman.

All the wrecks happened near or on bridges and overpasses. No major injuries reported in any of those accidents.

With temperatures warming up, it will be safe to go back to that last minute holiday shopping Tuesday afternoon.

Cooke County Deputy injured

A Cooke County Sheriff’s Deputy is recovering this afternoon after his patrol unit lost control early Tuesday morning on a bridge and hit the guardrail at the intersection of Highway 82 and FM 678.

According to Cooke County Sheriff Mike Compton, the deputy was taken to North Central Texas Medical Center.

Officials say he has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home.

The patrol car was a total loss.

Denison patrol car hit

Authorities say a Denison police officer was responding to an accident scene near Spur 503 when a pickup truck lost control on the slippery ice and hit the patrol car, causing it to spin out of control.

No one was injured in that collision.

Sand trucks out

To make the roads a little safer, TX-DOT was out sanding roads, bridges, and overpasses Tuesday morning. Officials say they had a total of five trucks sanding the overpasses and bridges.

"The first report we received was at 7:30 chat cannot be applied until the ice is formed because the chat gets beat up by the traffic, so it’s not effective when there’s no ice and the same with the chemical you have to apply it when the ice actually forms," TX-DOT engineer Noel Paramanantham says.

Officials say when sand trucks are out, it is important to stay at least 250 feet behind them.

In Southern Oklahoma

Southern Oklahoma experienced some of the same problems Tuesday morning.

Traffic on Interstate 35 in Ardmore is actually moving pretty smoothly, but that was not the case further north on the interstate Tuesday around noon.

Traffic is creeping along in Murray County around the Turner Falls exit. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the interstate around this area is clear of accidents right now but was not this morning.

OHP say they tended to several accidents along Interstate 35 caused by slick roads, and county dispatchers said the same thing.

Garvin, Murray, Carter, Pontotoc, Johnston and Marshall Counties all reported accidents caused by slippery roads.

As temperatures warm up, it is still slow going because people are driving slowly and carefully, trying to prevent any more wrecks. So if you are getting ready to hit the road for your holiday travels, officials say to be careful and budget some extra driving time because the roads are still slick and wet.
