WESLEY, OK -- A father was killed Saturday when he collided head-on with his son on a county road near Wesley, OK.

According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, both men were members of the Wesley Volunteer Fire Department and had responded to a grass fire call just before 3:30pm on County Road Wesley, 13 miles east of U.S. Highway 69.

According to the OHP, 30-year-old Juston Myers, from Pittsburg, was driving his personal vehicle, a 2000 Ford Pickup, northbound on the county road. Clayton Rice, 30, from Pittsburg was a passenger in the pickup.

Myers' father, John C. Myers, 61, also from Pittsburg, was driving a Wesley Volunteer Fire Department vehicle, a converted 1985 Chevy pickup, southbound on the county road.

OHP's report states that due to heavy smoke on the roadway, the two vehicles collided head-on.

John C. Myers, the father, was pinned in his vehicle for over an hour and a half. He was freed by the jaws of life, but was pronounced dead at the scene due to, what the report calls "massive injuries."

Juston Myers, the son, was treated at the scene for leg injuries. His passenger, Rice was transported by Eagle Med to McAlester Hospital with head, leg and arm injuries. As of Saturday night, he was in good condition.

OMG HOW SAD!!!

Posted by: Vol. Firefighter Location: Oklahoma on Jan 7, 2009 at 06:39 PM
Well Jim I can tell you this much I have been through L.E.D.T.(Law Enforcement Driver Training) The course is designed to teach officers how to handle their police cruiser at a high rate of speed but, nothing could have forseen what was going to happen on this tragic day. I believe that the only thing that could have changed the out come or the situation was the good lord. He had a reason for this happening this way, it will be a hards time for the family and friends of all involved, but with the thoughts and prayers of all, and the blessing from the lord above they will get through this terrible time.

To Vol.Firefighter- Why would you find it had to believe i was you don't know me second you can't tell me that people do not get the yeehaww sendrom. I even got it ever now and then cops get it everyone gets it at one time or anouther. Third not to say this guy had it this was a bad thing that took place And i pray for the family I am not pointing fingers but I do think that Firefighter should have to do like cops and take a driving class for safety to help everyone under stand the things that could and can go wrong.

I was a friend of all three people in the accident. U have two remember 1 thing about the fire. It was located at the house of the older brother and son of these two. So yea im sure they was in a hurry but the three of them live less then a mile from each so i really dont think they was going that fast. At 40 mph with the water on the truck it could have caused this damage. And when u are in your personal truck as a firefighter it becomes a emergency truck. J.C u will be missed.

They do if they are not in an emergency vehicle and the young man was not in one I don't think the dad was doing the speeding. Also the main idea is if you can't see SLOW DOWN.

To Nancy, Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rice family, We hope Clayton has a speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers also go out to the Myers family for the loss of their loved one. To Jim I find it hard to believe you were ever a FIREFIGHTER, 100% of the Fire Departments I have worked with and trained with makes safety their number one priority, Yes the accident was a tragety to the dept. and the families involved, however if you knew anything about vehicles you would noe that a vehicle moving at just 5mph into a stationary wall has the impact of 15,000 lbs mutiply that by two objects of the same weight, same speed, and ad the motion of the water going foward on impact and you would have a force of approxamatly 80,000lbs what do you think the damage would be. As for the yeehah sindrom I think you are mistaken. Brother Firefighters and Hero's Keep up the good work protect our families and country. Thank you

Our prayers are with a fallen brother.

yeehaw...thats almost as good as tvfb..typical volunteer firefighter behavior emergency vehicles do not have to obey speed limits, but they need to remain safe. For their safety and the publics.

To Anonymouse jan 6 8:44am- They don't need to go 30 but the don't need to go 100 in the smoke. If you can't see slow down the guy was also in his own vehicle and he can't speed in that the dad could he was in a E.R.V Once again the guy got the yeehaww thing going. I am sad this took place I was a vff untell I left that town. Some people get a rush and don't think strait it was a mistake the guy will have to live with. May god watch over them all

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 6, 2009 at 08:44 AM
How awful. May God be with the family and other firefighters in their time of grief. AND Jim I suppose when your house is on fire you expect the fire trucks to go 30 MPH. They call it RUSHING to a fire for a reason. I mean, truely, how often do accidents like this happen...it was a tragic accident, we don't need to start enforcing speed limits on the fire firefighters. Worry about yourself and let the firefighters do their job!

Posted by: Jim Location: Denison on Jan 6, 2009 at 06:13 AM
The thing is he was driving that fast in the smoke if you can't see slow down. Firefighters can't just drive as fast as they want. I have seen this prob in little towns before they get thet yehaww thing going and speed without thinking.

my thoughts are with this family and my cousin (clayton Rice ) the passenger in the vehicle. Clayton is doing ok he had surgery on his hip the night of the wreck and being trasferred to tulsa Hospital.

realist, do you really think if these two had tehir seat belts on it would have saved tehir life, LOOK AT THE PICTURE!!! and speed limit can you not read they were going to a fire, I really don't think you would be driving the speed limit if you were a fireman

Posted by: realist Location: everywhere on Jan 5, 2009 at 05:05 PM
tvfb. seatbelts? speed limits?
